Report: Jose Mourinho holding out for big Manchester United pay rise

Jose Mourinho will reportedly not sign a new contract at Manchester United unless his current £15m-a-year salary is significantly hiked.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho will delay signing a contract extension at Old Trafford until his wage demands are met, according to a report.

The Portuguese is currently less than halfway through the three-year deal signed when taking over from Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2016.

Mourinho cast doubt over his future beyond the end of his existing deal at the weekend when admitting that he has aspirations of managing elsewhere before retiring, with Paris Saint-Germain job understood to be of interest to him.

United chiefs will reportedly push ahead in offering the 54-year-old a new deal, though, after an impressive first 17 months at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, The Guardian claims that the former Chelsea boss will only put pen to paper if his salary reflects his achievements at the club, having won two trophies in his first season and guided United into early Premier League title contention in his second.

Mourinho is understood to currently earn around £15m a year, but a marked improvement - possibly including incentives - will be required if he is to commit beyond the end of next season.
