Manchester United and England forward Wayne Rooney defends his fitness record, responding to criticism from Sir Alex Ferguson and Mick Clegg.

Manchester United and England forward Wayne Rooney has defended his fitness record.

Sir Alex Ferguson wrote in his autobiography that Rooney's qualities could be "swallowed up by a lack of fitness".

The 28-year-old has also been accused by former United fitness coach Mick Clegg of 'hating the gym'.

However, Rooney claims that he has always worked hard on the physical aspect of his game.

Asked whether his fitness levels are currently better than ever, Rooney told The Mirror: "No, it is the same as last season. I know because I've got all the stats."

Rooney then hinted that his hard work was often overlooked by Ferguson.

"I'm just saying my fitness is the same as last season," he added. "But, obviously, it's been noticed this season. That's all.

"Every player gets his stats from every training session and every game. I go through my stats every day. They are pinned up around the training ground every day – and after every game.

"You always get them. It's the same system with England at Wembley. It's something which you can monitor in terms of how much work you are doing and whether you need a bit of a rest."

Rooney has scored nine goals in 20 appearances for club and country this season.
