Manchester United's Wayne Rooney: 'Draw with Newcastle United feels like defeat'

Wayne Rooney admits that Manchester United's 3-3 draw with Newcastle United 'feels like a defeat' after they relinquished the lead twice.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has admitted that the dramatic 3-3 draw against Newcastle United feels "like a defeat".

The England skipper put United ahead with a ninth-minute penalty and Jesse Lingard doubled the team's lead seven minutes from half time at St James' Park.

However, Georginio Wijnaldum struck just before the break and Aleksandar Mitrovic drew level for Newcastle in the second half.

Rooney had thought that he had won the game for the Red Devils with a 79th-minute penalty, but Paul Dummett scored in the 90th minute to earn a share of the spoils.

"It does feel like a defeat," BBC Sport quotes Rooney as saying. "After scoring three good goals, it was maybe a lack of concentration, not staying with runners for the third, and that is disappointing.

"If you take a two-goal lead, we should be taking all three points and killing the game off. We didn't take all our chances and we have been punished for it.

"We always want to try and play entertaining attacking football that is what we work on and try and do, and hopefully we can come up with more solutions."

United are sixth in the Premier League table, one point behind fifth-placed West Ham United.
