Five players Manchester United could sell during this summer's transfer window

Sports Mole identifies five players that Manchester United could attempt to sell this summer.
Sports Mole

Manchester United have already confirmed that Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard will be leaving the club on free transfers at the end of June.

Juan Mata is also out of contract this summer, and the 34-year-old is expected to depart despite recently suggesting that he could extend his stay with the 20-time English champions.

The departures will see Man United significantly trim their wage bill, and others are likely to move on during the summer market, as new head coach Erik ten Hag looks to put together a squad capable of challenging for the major trophies once again.

With that in mind, Sports Mole picks out five players that the Red Devils could attempt to sell in the upcoming market to boost their transfer funds.

Dean Henderson (Goalkeeper)

Dean Henderson only three times for Man United during the 2021-22 campaign, with David de Gea the club's number one goalkeeper throughout the season.

The England international did spend a chunk of the 2020-21 season as first choice and had been in line to start the recent campaign, but he struggled to overcome COVID-19, which allowed De Gea to regain his spot.

Henderson only signed a new long-term deal at Old Trafford in August 2020, and his substantial wages will make it difficult for interested clubs to sign him in the upcoming market.

Newcastle United are said to be showing the strongest interest in the 25-year-old, though, and it would certainly not be a surprise to see him move on this summer.

Indeed, Henderson needs regular football in the first half of next term to stand a chance of making the England squad for the 2022 World Cup, and he previously proved himself in the Premier League at Sheffield United.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Right-back)

Ten Hag has allegedly already decided that Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be surplus to requirements at Man United during this summer's transfer window.

The 24-year-old made 26 appearances for the Red Devils during the 2021-22 campaign, with 20 of those outings coming in the Premier League, but he struggled to secure regular action in the second half of the season, with interim head coach Ralf Rangnick preferring Diogo Dalot.

While Dalot is expected to remain at Old Trafford this summer, the same cannot be said for Wan-Bissaka, who has found it difficult to kick on at the club since arriving from Crystal Palace in July 2019.

There have been claims that Palace are interested in taking him back to Selhurst Park, while Atletico Madrid are believed to be keen on a loan move for the Englishman.

Wan-Bissaka still has more than two years left to run on his current deal, and Man United will be hopeful that there is a team prepared to take him on a permanent basis, but the price will be nowhere near the £50m that they paid for him three years ago.

Eric Bailly (Centre-back)

Even with Man United struggling defensively for long stages of the 2021-22 campaign, there was not much football for Eric Bailly, with the Ivory Coast international featuring on just seven occasions in all competitions, with only four of those coming in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old has had some brilliant times during his six years at the club, but injuries have been a problem for him over the last few seasons, and he was not always in the squad in the latter stages of the recent Premier League campaign.

Bailly, who has made 113 appearances for the Red Devils in total since arriving from Villarreal, still has more than two years left to run on his deal, with the option of a further 12 months.

The defender's healthy wage packet places Man United in a difficult position when it comes to selling him, but it is thought that he is keen to leave this summer in search of regular action.

There has recently been talk of Italian interest in the centre-back, and Bailly has allegedly already told his teammates that he will be moving on this summer.

Phil Jones (Centre-back)

Phil Jones recovered from a long-term knee injury to make five appearances for Man United during the 2021-22 campaign, including four outings in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old held his own in the Premier League games with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Liverpool, Chelsea and Brentford, demonstrating that he still has plenty to offer at this level of football.

Jones is unlikely to be part of Ten Hag's plans moving forward, though, with the Dutchman said to be keen to sign a new centre-back this summer to compliment Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

The Englishman, who has made 228 appearances for Man United since arriving from Blackburn Rovers in 2011, is believed to be of interest to a number of Premier League clubs.

Jones still has more than a year left on his deal, though, with the option of a further 12 months, so a loan move this summer rather than a permanent exit cannot be ruled out.

Anthony Martial (Forward)

Anthony Martial was allowed to join Sevilla on loan in the January transfer window after struggling for regular action in the first half of the 2021-22 campaign at Man United.

The France international found it tough to make his mark at Estadio Ramon, though, managing just one goal and one assist in 12 appearances in all competitions.

Sevilla have passed up on the chance to sign the attacker on a permanent deal, meaning that, as it stands, he will be returning to Man United for pre-season at the end of this month.

The 26-year-old has scored 79 goals and registered 50 assists in 269 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions but has found it difficult over the last couple of seasons.

Martial did net 17 Premier League goals during the 2019-20 campaign, though, and there will not be a shortage of interest if he did become available for transfer in the upcoming market.
