Sports Mole picks out five players who could leave Manchester United this summer, including club captain Harry Maguire.
Sports Mole

Manchester United are planning to be active during this summer's transfer window, with head coach Erik ten Hag looking to lead the club back to the top of English and European football.

The Red Devils are expected to move for a big-money centre-forward, while a new central midfielder is also expected to arrive in what could be another costly deal.

As a result, there will have to be first-team outgoings this summer, with the club needing to comply with the financial rules and regulations.

Here, Sports Mole picks out five players that are likely to leave Old Trafford ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, with the list not including any individuals who could depart on free transfers, namely Tom Heaton, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe.

HARRY MAGUIRE

Harry Maguire stayed with Man United in January despite a host of speculation surrounding his future, with Aston Villa, West Ham United and Inter Milan among those to be linked with the 29-year-old.

However, it does appear that he will be leaving Old Trafford over the summer, having lost his spot in the starting side.

Red Devils boss Ten Hag recently denied that Maguire was his fifth-choice centre-back, but Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane are undoubtedly ahead of him, while there is an argument that both Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw are also ahead in the manager's thinking when it comes to the roles in central defence.

Maguire has only started four Premier League games this season, while he was a late substitute against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg on Wednesday night despite Man United entering that match with a 3-0 lead from the first leg.

There is not an obvious route for him back into the starting XI, and it would seemingly be best for all parties if he departed during the summer market.

There will not be a shortage of takers for the England international, especially considering his form for Leicester City and indeed at international level, and the Red Devils will believe that he is a player capable of raising a healthy transfer fee in the summer market.

BRANDON WILLIAMS

Brandon Williams was expected to leave Man United on loan before the end of the January transfer window, but a move for the English defender did not occur.

The 22-year-old has a contract with the Red Devils until June 2024, with the option of a further 12 months, but there is every chance that he could leave on a permanent basis this summer.

Williams is behind Shaw and Tyrell Malacia when it comes to the left-back spot, while Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are ahead of him for the right-back position.

The defender has only played five minutes of first-team football this season, but he has featured on 51 occasions for the Red Devils in all competitions.

Williams also impressed during a loan spell at Norwich City in 2021-22, playing 29 times for the Canaries, and there are likely to be plenty of Premier League and Championship clubs keeping a close eye on his situation.

SCOTT MCTOMINAY

Scott McTominay, like Maguire, was linked with a January exit, with Newcastle United thought to be interested in signing the Scotland international, potentially on loan for the rest of the season.

The midfielder ultimately remained at Old Trafford, and he will be hopeful of playing an important role for the Red Devils once he has recovered from the muscular injury that is currently keeping him on the sidelines.

McTominay has fallen down the pecking order this season following the arrivals of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, and with Man United likely to move for another midfielder this summer, the club's academy product might need to move elsewhere to secure regular starts.

The Scot has made 24 appearances for Man United this season, including 15 in the Premier League, and he has more than two years left to run on his contract with the club.

McTominay has also proved himself at the club over a long period, featuring on 194 occasions for the 20-time English champions, but at the age of 26, he could go elsewhere to secure the football that he undoubtedly needs at this stage of his professional career.

ANTHONY MARTIAL

Ten Hag is clearly a huge fan of Anthony Martial, who won over the new manager during pre-season, but the Frenchman has struggled with fitness problems this season.

When available, the 27-year-old has impressed, boasting a record of six goals and two assists in 14 appearances this season, but he has been unavailable for long spells through injury.

Man United are widely expected to move for a new centre-forward this summer, and there have been claims that Wout Weghorst could be signed on a permanent basis as a rotation option.

Martial, who had an unsuccessful loan spell at Sevilla in the second half of last season, has entered the final 18 months of his contract with the Red Devils.

The Frenchman has actually now been with the club for almost eight years, scoring 85 goals and registering 52 assists in 283 appearances in all competitions.

Martial has largely struggled to fulfil his early potential, though, and it would certainly not be a shock if he were allowed to depart on a permanent basis this summer.

ANTHONY ELANGA

Anthony Elanga was linked with a number of clubs during the January market, with Barcelona believed to have considered signing him on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old certainly has a lot of admirers, and he has now featured on 49 occasions for Man United, scoring four goals and registering four assists in the process.

There is not an obvious route for him into the team's first XI on a consistent basis, though, especially if Ten Hag has all of his attacking players available for selection.

Elanga has made 20 appearances for Man United this season, but he has failed to score and only managed to contribute two assists, which are disappointing numbers for a forward player.

Alejandro Garnacho and arguably also Facundo Pellistri are currently ahead of him in the pecking order, and he has only played 21 minutes of Premier League football in 2023.

The Sweden international has shown a lot of early promise but could depart to secure regular action, and Man United would fancy their chances of securing a relatively high fee due to his undoubted talent. body check tags ::
