Atletico Madrid are reportedly "paying close attention" to Mason Greenwood's situation at Manchester United, with the forward widely expected to be sold during the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Getafe, and he has been in impressive form for the capital outfit this season, scoring eight goals and registering five assists in 26 appearances in all competitions.

Man United's new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently suggested that there could be a route for Greenwood back into the first-team picture at Old Trafford.

However, a recent report claimed that a permanent exit is still 'the most likely outcome' this summer despite the speculation and comments from Ratcliffe.

Barcelona are allegedly not in the running for Greenwood, but Getafe have already expressed a desire to keep hold of the Englishman beyond the end of the campaign.

According to journalist Matteo Moretto, writing in his Daily Briefing for Football Espana, Atletico are keen on Greenwood, but Man United's valuation is likely to make a move difficult.

"Atletico Madrid are paying close attention to Greenwood's situation, but there's been no movement beyond that," wrote Moretto.

"It remains true that Manchester United have not made up their minds 100% on what they want to do with Greenwood, what with the new ownership coming in, and potentially a new manager too.

"What is clear is that Greenwood does not want to go back to Manchester United. He wants to leave, and he would be very happy to stay in Spain, but what could get in the way of that is his price tag.

"United will want to get as much money as they can get out of a deal for him. It's a story that will continue unfolding, because Atletico are interested and so are other clubs, but Barcelona are not one of them. They are not in the race for Greenwood."

Man United are believed to value Greenwood, who has another 12 months left to run on his contract at Old Trafford, in the region of £40m.

The forward has scored 35 goals and registered 12 assists in 129 matches for his parent club in all competitions, but he has not featured for the Red Devils since early 2022.

Following accusations from a woman, Greenwood was arrested two years ago on suspicion of rape and assault, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

The Englishman was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but the case against him was dropped last February. body check tags ::
