Portugal defender Jose Fonte has claimed that Manchester United will 'regret' missing out on Renato Sanches, who swapped Benfica for Bayern Munich before the start of Euro 2016.
Man United were believed to be the frontrunners for the 18-year-old in the second half of the season, but uncertainty surrounding the future of Louis van Gaal saw Bayern swoop in to land the midfielder.
Sanches scored Portugal's equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Poland in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 on Thursday night, before netting a penalty in the shootout as the Iberian nation advanced.
Southampton captain Fonte has lavished praise on the teenager and claimed that Bayern 'are lucky' to have secured the services of the Portuguese.
"Being a Premier League player, for me, they missed out on a very good talent. He's a nice kid, he listens to the old guys, he wants to learn, which is good. It's great to have him around and he'll be the future of the national side for sure," Fonte told reporters.
"He's got no fear. He just doesn't care. He goes and asks for the ball every second. He's got power and strength, energy to run all day and great ability. It is lucky for Bayern Munich that they have him."
It is believed that Sanches could end up costing Bayern in excess of £50m.
