Man United 'contacted' by Napoli over move for 27-year-old

Napoli contact Manchester United to register their interest in signing central midfielder Scott McTominay, according to a report.

Napoli have reportedly been in touch with Manchester United to register their interest in signing central midfielder Scott McTominay.

There has been widespread speculation surrounding the Scotland international's future this summer, with the Red Devils said to be open to letting him leave for the right price.

Fulham are believed to have had a bid turned down for McTominay this summer, with Man United thought to be unwilling to entertain offers of under £30m.

Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag said last month that he wants to keep hold of the 27-year-old, who scored 10 goals and registered three assists in 43 appearances at club level last season.

I think we have very good players so they'll always have an interest from other clubs," the Manchester Evening News quoted Ten Hag as saying at the time.

Napoli 'contact' Man United to discuss McTominay deal

"If you score 10 goals in a season and perform very well for Scotland there will be an interest. We want to actually keep him because he's a very important player for our squad.

"We've seen what he can contribute last season. When we had the sixes and he could play in a more advanced role, he's a highly interesting player for our team."

However, according to Corriere dello Sport, Napoli have contacted Man United to register their interest in the midfielder, who only has a contract at Old Trafford until June 2025.

Napoli are said to be closing in on a move for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Billy Gilmour, but the Italian giants are also confident that they also have the funds to sign McTominay.

Should Man United let McTominay leave?

McTominay scored seven Premier League goals for Man United last season, while he has an overall record of 29 goals and eight assists in 252 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The midfielder proved himself to Red Devils head coach Ten Hag last season, but with Casemiro looking likely to stay, and Mason Mount back to full fitness, it is difficult to imagine McTominay starting too many games next term, especially as a new player is also expected to arrive in his area of the field.

Man United are allegedly in discussions with Paris Saint-Germain over a deal for Jadon Sancho, which could see midfielder Manuel Ugarte move in the opposite direction.

McTominay's work-rate and desire simply cannot be called into question, but it is difficult to see where he fits into the Red Devils XI on a consistent basis moving forward, so a transfer makes sense for all parties, providing that Man United receive a transfer fee which is close to their asking price. body check tags ::
