Newcastle United's news signing Alexander Isak reportedly rejected the chance to join Premier League rivals Manchester United in favour of moving to St James' Park.

The Magpies announced the signing of the 22-year-old from Real Sociedad on Friday for a club-record fee, believed to be worth up to £63m.

The likes of Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City had all been credited with an interest in signing Isak, but Newcastle managed to win the race for his signature.

According to reports in Spain, the Red Devils attempted to lure Isak to Old Trafford with a 'juicy offer', but the Sweden international turned down the chance to link up with Erik ten Hag.

The report adds that Real Sociedad were aware of United's approach for Isak, but the striker was advised by his agent to rebuff their interest and instead move to Newcastle.

Speaking to Newcastle's official website on his arrival at the club, Isak said: "I'm delighted to have it done. It was a big, big decision for me but it is a decision I am really happy with.

"It is a great, historical club that I think anyone would like to play for, with amazing fans. They were a big part of why I came here - and also the club's project, which is one that I really believe in.

"You always want to go into a team and know how they play. I think Newcastle play very attractive football and I want to be a part of that."

It remains uncertain whether Isak will be able to make his Newcastle debut away against Liverpool on Wednesday night as he is yet to receive his work permit.

Although Man United have missed out on signing Isak, they are still keen to bolster their attacking options before the transfer window shuts on Thursday, and they have now officially announced that they have reached an agreement with Ajax to sign Antony in a deal worth up to £85m.

The 22-year-old Brazilian arrived in the UK on Monday night for his medical and his big-money move is on the verge of completion.

United are also thought to be considering a move for PSV Eindhoven's Cody Gakpo, although they could face competition from a host of other clubs including Southampton, who have recently seen a bid rejected for the 23-year-old by the Dutch outfit.

In addition, Ten Hag is looking to bolster his options between the sticks, after allowing Dean Henderson to join Nottingham Forest on loan, and the Red Devils have allegedly reached an agreement with Newcastle to sign goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on an initial loan deal with an option to buy the Slovakian for £5m next summer. body check tags ::
