Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said that the club's hopes of competing for the Premier League title next season rest on how they perform in the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils finished fourth in Van Gaal's debut campaign in charge at Old Trafford, securing the club's return to the Champions League.
Netherlands international Memphis Depay has already agreed to sign for United from PSV Eindhoven ahead of next season, but Van Gaal hopes that there will be more arrivals at Old Trafford before the campaign kicks off.
"I'm afraid that the board of Manchester United shall say, 'Now we have to battle for the championship,'" Van Gaal told The Times.
"It is a fantastic challenge but that is dependable on how we can purchase very good players and how we can improve the balance in our selection.
"The balance in our selection was not good [this season]. In every position you need two players who can play and then you can change more easily and they can perform better, how you want them to perform."
United reportedly want to sign Bayern Munich defender Dante this season.
