Manchester United could reportedly attempt to use Donny van de Beek in a bid to sign Milan Skriniar from Inter Milan during the January transfer window.
Skriniar's contract at San Siro is due to expire next June, and there has been a host of speculation surrounding his future over the last few weeks.
Man United are believed to be one of the clubs interested in the 27-year-old, and according to InterLive, the 20-time English champions could offer Van de Beek in a potential swap deal.
The Serie A giants are believed to be admirers of the Netherlands international, who has only played 19 minutes of football for the Red Devils during the 2022-23 campaign.
The 25-year-old had been expected to be given a chance to impress under his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, but the Dutchman is still struggling to break into the side.
A disappointing spell at Old Trafford has seen the midfielder, who still has three years left to run on his contract, manage just two goals and two assists in 53 appearances in all competitions.
Skriniar has remained a vital player for Inter despite the speculation surrounding his future, with the Slovakia international making 11 appearances this term.
Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta recently addressed the transfer rumours and called the centre-back "a certainty" for the team.
"It's annoying to see how these things disrupt, I say that the players are professionals but at the same time they're very young and they're being put under this kind of pressure," Marotta told reporters.
"It would be better to reduce the transfer window but this is an unusual season with the World Cup in the middle. Skriniar is a certainty for our team."
Meanwhile, Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio has claimed that Inter are working on a new deal for Skriniar which would see him become one of the top earners at the club.
"The offer will be for around €6m-€6.5m (£5.3m-£5.7m) net per season," said Di Marzio. "And if the player asks for what PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) offered him in the summer, it's clear that no agreement can be found."
As well as Man United and PSG, Real Madrid and Chelsea are also believed to be interested in signing the Slovakian, who has made 226 appearances for Inter since arriving from Sampdoria in 2017.
The 20-time English champions signed Lisandro Martinez to boost their defence over the summer, but Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire are currently on the sidelines through injury, leaving Ten Hag short of options in the middle.
Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are also expected to leave the club in 2023, while Eric Bailly could join Marseille on a permanent basis.
