Manchester United could reportedly move for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries during this summer's transfer window if Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaves the club.
Wan-Bissaka has allegedly been told that he is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford in the current market, with Diogo Dalot seemingly in charge of the right-back spot ahead of the new season.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 20-time English champions will consider bringing a new right-sided defender to the club if Wan-Bissaka moves on.
Romano claims that Dumfries "is appreciated" by new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag, but the Premier League side are not currently in discussions over a possible deal for the Netherlands international.
The 26-year-old was an important player for his Italian club during the 2021-22 campaign, contributing five goals and seven assists in 45 appearances in all competitions.
"Manchester United will think of a right back only if Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaves," Romano wrote in his column for CaughtOffside. "The club are taking the time in pre-season to assess him and other players.
"My understanding is that Diogo Dalot is in the plans of Erik ten Hag, with the Portuguese youngster appreciated by the manager.
"Despite some of the transfer rumours, Jonathan Clauss has never been a Manchester United target, he will soon sign with Olympique Marseille; Denzel Dumfries is appreciated by Ten Hag but there are still no negotiations with Inter Milan."
The Dutchman only arrived at San Siro from PSV Eindhoven last summer, penning a four-year contract with the club, but there have been claims that he could be sold to reduce the team's high wage bill.
There have been suggestions that a fee in the region of €30m (£26m) would be enough to convince Inter to let the right-sided defender depart in the current market.
Dumfries scored five goals and provided five assists in 33 Serie A appearances during the 2021-22 campaign and largely operated as a right-sided wing-back for the San Siro giants.
Dalot has been impressive for Man United during pre-season, and the indications are that the Portugal international will start the new season as the club's first-choice right-back.
Ethan Laird has also been involved for the team in Australia, with the youngster battling to provide back-up for Dalot next term, which would potentially drop Wan-Bissaka down to third choice.
A recent report claimed that the 20-time English champions were closing in on a deal for Lens defender Jonathan Clauss.
However, it is believed that the 29-year-old, who scored five goals and registered 11 assists in Ligue 1 last season, is instead nearing a move to Marseille. body check tags ::
