Manchester United are reportedly one of several Premier League clubs that are interested in signing highly-rated Lille striker Jonathan David in the summer transfer window.

Erik ten Hag's side are expected to bolster their attack this summer, having scored the fewest goals among the Premier League's top seven teams last season.

The Red Devils netted 57 goals during the 2023-24 league campaign, one less than 16th-placed Brentford, and nearly 30 fewer than Newcastle United, who finished one spot above them.

Only two players reached double figures in the top flight for United last term, while their sixth-highest goalscorer was Kobbie Mainoo, who managed just three goals.

The need for Ten Hag's side to sign a striker this summer has been made even clearer by the imminent departure of Anthony Martial, whose contract is only days away from expiring.

Man United plotting summer move for Jonathan David

According to a report from HITC, Man United have now identified Lille striker Jonathan David as a potential candidate to partner Rasmus Hojlund in attack next season.

However, the report adds that the Red Devils are set to face stiff competition to sign the 24-year-old, with Premier League rivals West Ham United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all believed to be keeping tabs on the Canadian international.

The Blues are currently scouring the market for a number nine after Nicolas Jackson experienced a mixed first season at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs, on the other hand, are yet to secure a long-term replacement for Harry Kane, who made the move to Bayern Munich at the start of last season.

David has been linked with a move to England in the past, and has previously expressed his desire to play in the Premier League despite ongoing interest from teams in Italy, Germany and Spain.

It is understood that David could finally get his move this summer, with reports suggesting he could be available for as little as £25m.

David set for Premier League move ahead of 2024-25 season

The Canadian striker has been very impressive since arriving in Ligue 1 from Belgian outfit Gent, scoring 71 goals in 146 league appearances for Lille.

He has also never failed to hit double digits in a season during his senior playing career.

David has one year left on his current contract at Stade Pierre Mauroy and the club's president Olivier Letang admitted earlier this month that he, along with teenager Leny Yoro, are likely to depart this summer.

"We have two players who have an exit voucher, Leny (Yoro) and Jonathan (David). They will be allowed to leave," Letang told reporters in an interview last week.

United are also interested in Yoro, but they are expected to face stiff competition from both Real Madrid and Liverpool, with the former hoping to sign him as a free agent in 12 months' time. body check tags ::
