Manchester United are in talks with Lazio over the signing of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, according to a report.
The Red Devils have long been interested in the Serbian midfielder and could complete their move before Thursday's transfer deadline, should they lose Paul Pogba to Real Madrid.
According to Metro, United believe that Milinkovic-Savic would make the ideal replacement for Pogba.
Executives at Old Trafford are still desperate to retain the French midfielder, though, having reportedly rejected Real Madrid's opening offer of £27.4m plus James Rodriguez.
Pogba missed Manchester United's 2-2 draw with AC Milan on Sunday due to a back injury, although reports suggested that he was still expected to turn up for the pre-season encounter.
The Red Devils have also been linked with Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes ahead of Thursday's 5pm transfer deadline.
