Manchester United 'weighing up move for Guido Rodriguez'

Manchester United weigh up a summer move for Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez, according to a report.

Manchester United are reportedly admirers of Guido Rodriguez, with the Red Devils considering moving for the Real Betis midfielder before the end of the summer transfer window.

Erik ten Hag's side have been pursuing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong since the end of May, but they are seemingly now looking at alternative targets, as a proposed deal for the Dutchman continues to stall.

Adrien Rabiot is thought to be closing in on a switch to Old Trafford from Juventus, but Man United could sign two new central midfielders this summer, with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic leaving on free transfers over the summer.

According to AS, Real Betis' Rodriguez has been identified as a possible acquisition, with senior figures at Old Trafford huge admirers of the 28-year-old.

The report claims that Betis value the midfielder in the region of €20m (£16.9m), which would make him another low-cost addition alongside Rabiot.

Rodriguez, who has been capped on 24 occasions by Argentina, moved to Betis from Club America in 2020, and he has been a vital player during his time with the Seville outfit.

Last season, the midfielder scored twice and provided three assists in 47 appearances in all competitions, including one goal and two assists in 32 La Liga outings.

The South American also played six times in the Copa del Rey and nine times in the Europa League during a productive 2021-22 campaign.

Rodriguez's current deal with Betis only has two years left to run, meaning that the La Liga outfit are not in a strong position to demand a high transfer fee during the summer market.

Fred and Scott McTominay started as the two central midfielders in Sunday's Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Red Devils.

Donny van de Beek is back at Old Trafford this summer following a loan spell at Everton, but Red Devils boss Ten Hag has said that he views the Dutchman as more of a number 10.

James Garner impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, but it is believed that the midfielder is set for another spell away from Old Trafford.

As a result, Man United are short of options in central midfield, with Rabiot potentially being joined by one more before the end of the window, although it is believed that a move for Rodriguez is likely to depend on whether the club give up their pursuit of De Jong.

Everton are also believed to be interested in signing the Betis midfielder before the end of the window. body check tags ::
