Manchester United captain Harry Maguire emerges as a summer transfer target for Newcastle United, according to a report.

Newcastle United are reportedly considering a summer move for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

The 30-year-old has lost his starting role at the club this season, and he is widely expected to leave Old Trafford on a permanent basis during this summer's transfer window.

A number of teams, including former club Leicester City and West Ham United, have been credited with an interest in the England international, who made a high-profile switch to Old Trafford in August 2019.

According to 90min, Newcastle are also keeping a close eye on the situation, with the Magpies considering making a bid to sign him when the summer window opens for business.

The report claims that Man United want to sell Maguire, but it is possible that the experienced defender could leave on loan if the structure of the deal makes sense for all parties.

Newcastle are now one of the wealthiest clubs in world football due to their recent takeover, with the Magpies looking to build a team capable of challenging for the biggest prizes in the game.

Eddie Howe's side in the hunt for a top-four spot in this season's Premier League table, currently sitting sixth in the division, four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the team are winless in their last five matches in England's top flight, which is a run that includes defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City in their last two games.

Due to their elimination from the FA Cup, Newcastle only have another two matches in March, welcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers to St James' Park on Sunday before visiting Nottingham Forest five days later.

Maguire has made 21 appearances for Man United during the 2022-23 campaign but only 10 of those outings have been in the Premier League.

The former Sheffield United youngster has started just five times in England's top flight this term, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez both ahead of him in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw has also been used as a central defender this season, while there is an argument that Victor Lindelof is ahead of Maguire in the thinking of Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag.

The Englishman has only started once in the Premier League since the start of January, while he was not involved in Sunday's 7-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Maguire signed a six-year deal with the Red Devils upon his arrival, so he still has another two years left to run on the agreement, with the option to extend for a further 12 months. body check tags ::
