Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has played down his side's failed transfer of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, claiming that it is part and parcel of football.

The stopper was widely expected to move to the Bernabeu before the Spanish transfer window closed on Monday, but the deal could not be completed due to the fact that his registration documents were not sent in time.

Ramos is quoted by Marca as saying: "I have not talked to David and do not know his opinion - but life goes on. Nobody has died for this. He must maintain his level, he is one of the best keepers. The world of football and signings is like this. Everyone tries to get the most and this is never easy for any player.

"He has had a bumpy summer because he has decided his future and that of his family. But it is something we have to go through at times, everyone has to understand the facts and do their best wherever they are."

The Red Devils had been linked with a move for Ramos throughout the summer and were reported to have had at least one bid rejected by Real.
