Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has said that Danny Welbeck is a great signing for the club.
The England international moved to the Gunners from Manchester United on transfer deadline day for a fee believed to be in the region of £16m.
Smith has claimed that United could regret allowing Welbeck to leave Old Trafford.
"It's good news for the player first and foremost and good news for Arsenal," Smith told Sky Sports News.
"To be fair, I think Arsenal is the only club that Danny wanted to go to and United weren't all that keen to sell him to a rival, which you can understand. Maybe he stood his ground and they had a change of heart at United.
"I think it's important that it's a permanent deal because he's still only young and he's got his best years to come, I'm convinced of that."
Welbeck was Arsene Wenger's fifth and final signing of the transfer window, following Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and David Ospina to the Emirates Stadium.
