Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says that midfielder Fred will be given 'plenty of opportunities' in the starting lineup this season.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reassured Fred that he will be given regular first-team action this season.

Despite having joined United for £52m last summer, Fred only went on to make 19 starts and five substitute outings in all competitions.

The Brazil international is yet to feature during the current campaign, which has resulted in suggestions that the 26-year-old may look to leave Old Trafford.

However, Solskjaer has insisted that the player will remain in his squad for the current campaign, hinting that more opportunities will come after the international break.

Solskjaer is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "He is working hard and at the moment he's just behind Paul [Pogba] and Scott [McTominay] – who has done really well – and Nemanja [Matic], who hasn't been involved.

"August is the most difficult period to manage a big squad because there's only one game a week and everybody's fit because we've had pre-season, and everyone's ready to play.

"In September, October, November – when injuries come – that's when you have most of the games. So, he will play plenty of football."

Fred will hope to earn a place on the substitutes' bench when United face Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
