David Moyes admits that he cannot guarantee that Wayne Rooney will sign a new Manchester United contract if the club fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has admitted that he cannot guarantee that Wayne Rooney will sign a new contract at Old Trafford.

Rooney's current £250,000-per-week deal is not due to expire until June 2015, but Moyes is keen for the 28-year-old to commit his future to United as soon as possible.

However, the Daily Mail claims that Rooney want to postpone talks until the summer, as he wants to make sure that he will be able to play in next season's Champions League.

The Red Devils are currently five points behind fourth place in the Premier League table, meaning that qualification for Europe's top club competition is far from certain.

On the subject of how failure to qualify for the Champions League would affect United's chances of extending Rooney's contract, Moyes told reporters: "We would have to wait and see what happened in that situation."

Rooney, who is currently sidelined with a groin injury, has scored nine goals in 17 Premier League appearances this season.
