Two extra-time goals from Andre-Pierre Gignac see Marseille get past Reims in the Coupe de France.

Two extra-time goals from Andre-Pierre Gignac have given Marseille a 2-0 victory over Reims in the Coupe de France.

Marseille rattled the woodwork with only three minutes played as Dimitri Payet took the ball down just outside of the box, before unleashing a wild half-volley that cannoned back off of the crossbar.

Reims had an excellent chance to take the lead in the eighth minute when Nicolas de Preville latched onto a lofted ball in behind the defence, however, the striker couldn't convert his chance despite only having the keeper to beat.

Marseille keeper Brice Samba was called into action again, this time as De Preville let go with a stinging effort that looked headed for the top corner, but he somehow managed to get across and keep the ball out.

Samba continued his duel with De Preville after the break as he kept out the striker's effort with his legs, before Marseille's Gignac whistled a volley just wide of the post.

Reims thought that they had found an opener in the 70th minute when Etar got on the end of a superb cross from Gaetan Charbonnier to divert the ball past Samba, but his effort came back off the post.

Having weathered the storm, Marseille applied intense pressure in the final minutes as Gignac forced a wonder-save from Johnny Placide to keep the score level, with the keeper stepping up again to deny the striker from only a few yards out with only minutes remaining.

However, despite forcing extra time, Reims were unable to withstand an early Marseille onslaught, as Gignac grabbed an all-important opening goal just four minutes into the extra period when he volleyed home from inside the six-yard box.

The striker confirmed Marseille's passage five minutes from the end of the extra-time period as he found the net again, this time by powering home from inside the box.
