Cedric Yambare scored the only goal of the game to hand Bordeaux a 1-0 victory as Marseille lost more ground on the title chasers in Ligue 1.
Marseille were comfortable in the early stages of the game, but it was Bordeaux who came close to breaking the deadlock in spectacular fashion when Steve Mandanda's poor clearance reached Mariano, whose speculative volley came back off the post.
The visitors rattled the frame of the goal moments later, with Romain Alessandrini striking the post after collecting a clever pass from Andre Pierre-Gignac.
Bordeaux midfielder Jaroslav Plasil fired a shot just wide of the target, but Marseille finished the first half the stronger of the two sides as Cedric Carrasso got a crucial hand to the ball to push another Alessandrini effort against the post.
Marcelo Bielsa's side remained on top in the early stages of the second half as Gignac fired just wide before being left frustrated by a fine save from Carrasso.
However, it was the hosts who found the opening goal when the impressive Mariano collected the ball in space and delivered an inviting cross to allow Cedric Yambere to break the deadlock at the near post.
Bordeaux responded impressively to the pressure which followed from Marseille, and opportunities were rare for the visiting side as they went in search of an equaliser.
A clever piece of play from Wahbi Khazri almost created a second goal for the home side, but Alaixys Romao recovered well to make the tackle before Diego Rolan could add the finishing touch.
However, it was heroic defending at the other end which made the difference, with Ludovic Sane preventing Alessandrini from going through on goal late on as Bordeaux secured all three points.
