Louis van Gaal will be hoping to equal a World Cup record when Netherlands face Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Throughout the competition, Van Gaal has been required to fend off criticism regarding his team's performances, the perception being that their style of play has not been easy on the eye.

However, having come through the group stages with seven points from three matches, Oranje impressed as they recorded a 3-1 triumph over USA in the last 16.

The three-time runners up have now set up a showdown with Argentina, the two-time champions, at the Lusail Stadium on Friday.

While progressing through to the last four will be Van Gaal's priority, the veteran can also equal a tournament record in the process.

Should Netherlands win or take the game to penalties, Van Gaal will have gone 12 matches unbeaten at the World Cup.

Only former Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has gone that many games without suffering defeat since the start of his time in the competition.

Van Gaal has record a total of eight victories and three draws, Netherlands having reached the semi-finals back in 2014.

On that occasion in Brazil, Netherlands were only denied a place in the final courtesy of a penalty shootout, coincidentally versus Argentina, before beating the host nation in the third-place playoff.

The other draws during that period came against Costa Rica in the last eight in 2014, Netherlands winning on penalties, and versus Ecuador during their Group A schedule last month. body check tags ::
