Newcastle Jets have recorded their second win of the A-League campaign after a 76th-minute effort from David Carney gave them a 1-0 triumph over Melbourne Victory.
After a competitive opening 20 minutes, Jets almost took the lead when Leonardo whipped in a cross for Milos Trifunovic, but the Serbian striker was unable to apply the finishing touch.
Two minutes later, it was Victory's turn to go close to an opening goal, with Fahid Ben Khalfallah seeing a long-range strike tipped over the crossbar.
The visitors were beginning to get on top but they could not find a way past Ben Kennedy, who kept out an effort from Kosta Barbarouses, before Besart Berisha struck the crossbar from a tight angle.
The second half began with Trifunovic firing just wide after being sent through on goal, before up the other end, Guilherme Finkler forced another intervention out of Kennedy.
With 20 minutes remaining, Jets started to build some momentum, and moments after Danny Vukovic had denied him, Carney put his side into the lead after driving the ball into the net after a well-worked free kick.
Victory pushed for an equaliser, but Newcastle were able to hold out to move into second position in the A-League standings.
