Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in taking over at Newcastle United should the manager's job become available.

The 61-year-old secured a high-profile switch to Turkish giants Fenerbahce over the summer following his dismissal from Italian giants Roma earlier in the calendar year.

Mourinho has made a productive start to life in Turkey judging off his overall record, winning 10 and losing just two of his 17 competitive matches.

That being said, the Portuguese tactician failed to guide the Yellow Canaries to the Champions League after losing to Lille in the third round of qualifying in August.

Fenerbahce are currently occupying third position in the Super Lig standings after a solid start, five points behind unbeaten league leaders Galatasaray.

Mourinho eyeing up Newcastle role?

According to The Guardian, Portuguese coach Mourinho is targeting a return to the Premier League despite joining Fenerbahce at the start of this season.

The report claims that the 61-year-old is intrigued by the ongoing situation at Newcastle, where Saudi Arabian owners are looking to take the North-East club to the summit of the European game.

It is understood that Mourinho has been asked to be kept in the loop regarding the circumstances surrounding Eddie Howe's future with the Magpies.

The former Bournemouth boss was linked heavily with replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager, however the Football Association announced their decision to appoint German coach Thomas Tuchel for the role in October.

It is believed that Mourinho hold connections with Newcastle's hierarchy, meeting with the club's chairman at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in March.

Newcastle's current situation

Howe's Newcastle have endured a mixed start to competitive action in 2024-25, recently enduring a five-game winless run in the Premier League prior to a serious upturn in form.

Over the past 10 days, the Magpies have booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup at the expense of Chelsea before beating title challengers Arsenal in the league at St James' Park.

However, a current league standing of 11th will not satisfy the higher powers in the North-East, where European football is expected as a minimum nowadays.

As a result, Howe's position with Newcastle is not completely secure, and it would not be a surprise to see a serial winner such as Mourinho appointed to the role in the near future. body check tags ::
