Newcastle United come from behind to record a 4-2 victory over Southampton, courtesy of strikes from Moussa Sissoko, Papiss Cisse, Yohan Cabaye and an own goal by Jos Hooiveld.

Rickie Lambert's 100th career league goal was not enough to earn Southampton a share of the spoils, as the Saints were beaten 4-2 by Newcastle United in an entertaining game at St. James' Park this afternoon.

Southampton, who have now dropped 27 points from winnng positions this season, took the lead after just three minutes when Morgan Schneiderlin volleyed home from Lambert's knock-down.

Moussa Sissoko equalised for the hosts with a simple tap-in half an hour later, following a mazy run and shot by Yoan Gouffran.

Newcastle went ahead on 43 minutes courtesy of a wonder goal by Papiss Cisse.

A long punt forward by replacement goalkeeper Rob Elliot was missed by Luke Shaw and the ball fell to the Senegal international, who unleashed a thumping volley that looped over the head of Artur Boruc from 30 yards.

The first half ended on a sour note for Newcastle, as captain Fabricio Coloccini limped off and was replaced by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

Southampton almost found an immediate leveller at the start of the second period, as Lambert struck a free kick that was tipped around the post by Elliot.

The Saints topscorer did find the net moments later, as he swept the ball beyond Elliot following a drilled cross by Adam Lallana.

Parity lasted until the 67th minute, when Newcastle regained their lead from the penalty spot.

Yohan Cabaye coolly converted from 12 yards, after Daniel Fox had handled Mathieu Debuchy's cross at point-blank range.

Southampton were cursing their luck again 11 minutes from time, as Fox's clearance deflected off Jos Hooiveld and landed in the back of the Saints' net.

Southampton remain three points above the Premier League relegation zone, while Newcastle climb two places to 14th.
