Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud has confirmed that Newcastle United are interested in signing striker Diego Rolan.
The Uruguay international has been linked with a move to St James' Park, while Aston Villa are also said to be chasing his signature.
However, Triaud has played down reports linking the 22-year-old with Villa.
"There has been contact with Newcastle, but never directly with us, only through various intermediaries," Triaud told Mercato365.
"With Newcastle, I suppose you could say there is some truth in their interest.
"I've never heard talk of Aston Villa. They have never contacted us directly nor indirectly, via any agent, at the time of speaking."
Rolan scored 15 goals for Bordeaux last season.
