Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has assured Gabriel Obertan that he still has a future at St James' Park.
The 24-year-old has struggled for form since moving from Manchester United two years ago and is believed to be keen on securing a loan switch after being targeted by some Magpies fans.
However, Pardew believes that the French winger is "desperate" to impress and was pleased with his impact from the bench in Wednesday's League Cup victory over Leeds United.
"At times Gabby has come in for a bit of stick here," the 52-year-old told the Evening Chronicle. "Gabby's desperate to do well.
"His pace is still a real asset to us, especially when we take the lead. He can come off the bench and stretch teams. He came off the bench against Leeds and could have had a couple of goals.
"That was nice to have that option. We have more options now. I have to be able to make changes."
Newcastle travel to Goodison Park to play Everton on Monday.
