Elias Kachunga earned an unlikely Bundesliga point for SC Paderborn with an 89th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Freiburg at Benteler Arena.
An uneventful start to the match was soon forgotten when Freiburg were gifted a penalty in the 18th minute, after Uwe Hunemeier had foolishly brought down Felix Kraus inside the box.
Vladimir Darida stepped up from 12 yards to send Lukas Kruse the wrong way and calmly roll the ball into the bottom corner.
Paderborn would see plenty of the ball in the first half, but chances were difficult to come by for the hosts as Mahir Saglik struck a low effort straight at Roman Burki just before the break.
The luck looked to be going against Paderborn, who came agonisingly close to hitting back early in the second half when Kachunga rattled the post with a powerful effort.
Despite being forced onto the back foot for long spells, Freiburg had the chance to secure the win when Admir Mehmedi forced his way into the box, but Kruse responded impressively to keep the low shot out.
Freiburg would pay the price for not taking that opportunity when Burki sprinted off his line before miscuing an attempted clearance, allowing Kachunga to tap the ball into an empty net to snatch Paderborn a point.
