Poland battle to historic win over Germany

Poland record their first ever win over Germany at the 19th attempt with a 2-0 victory in Warsaw tonight, which takes them top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group.

Poland have beaten Germany for the first time in their history after second-half goals from Arkadiusz Milik and Sebastian Mila handed them a 2-0 victory over the world champions in their Euro 2016 Group D qualifier this evening.

The loss is Germany's first in a European qualifier since 2007 and leaves them floundering in third place in Group D after two games.

Thomas Muller was at the centre of the majority of the game's intriguing moments in the opening 20 minutes, as he went down theatrically inside the box before sending a shot straight at Wojciech Szczesny.

Mats Hummels then had the first real chance of the first half with a header which was blocked at point-blank range by Kamil Glik.

Germany continued to create chances, and Karim Bellarabi almost netted a debut goal for Joachim Low's side, but his volleyed effort at the far stick bobbled just wide of the upright.

Muller should have done better than fire wide in the 40th minute before Szczesny tipped away another strike from Bellarabi as the Germans turned up the heat before the interval.

Poland's first meaningful effort on target came in the 51st minute and it handed them the lead.

Lukasz Piszczek swung in a right-wing cross and Milik nipped in ahead of Manuel Neuer to direct the ball into the net to send the home crowd into raptures.

Germany almost responded immediately, but Szczesny made another fine save from Mario Gotze's low drive.

The fierce rivalry between the sides was plain for all to see as players clashed all over the pitch, but Germany continued to swarm forward, with Erik Durm and Andre Schurrle both testing Szczesny.

Bellarabi continued to have an eventful debut for Germany, but should have done better with two second half efforts - the first of which he poked wide before sending a subsequent shot at Szczesny

With Germany pouring forward in search of a leveller, Robert Lewandowski rolled the ball into the feet of Mila who sent a calm finish into the back of the net two minutes from time to spark wild celebrations in Warsaw as Poland finally registered their first win over their old foes.
