World Cup 2022: Poland vs. Argentina head-to-head record

Ahead of Wednesday's World Cup clash between Poland and Argentina, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record between the two sides.

Looking to make it two wins from two and secure a place in the last 16 as Group C winners, two-time world champions Argentina go head to head with Poland at Stadium 974.

After suffering a shock 2-1 defeat in last Tuesday's group opener against rank outsiders Saudi Arabia, Lionel Scaloni's men bounced back in style as they edged out South American rivals Mexico 2-0 four days later.

Following a drab first half, where they were repelled by a dogged Mexican defence, Lionel Messi delivered the goods once again as he broke the deadlock in the 64th minute before Enzo Fernandez put the result beyond doubt with an 87th minute strike.

As for Poland, they have enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign and currently sit at the top of the Group C standings with four points from their opening two matches.

Czeslaw Michniewicz's side kicked off their campaign with a goalless draw against Mexico on November 22, before brushing aside Saudi Arabia four days later courtesy of goals from Piotr Zielinski and leading marksman Robert Lewandowski.

While Poland have put themselves in pole position to secure a first knockout-stage appearance since 1986, they must avoid defeat on Wednesday as Argentina and Saudi Arabia are both level on three points.

However, getting the job done against the two-time world champions could prove a tad bit challenging for Poland, who have lost six of the last 11 meetings between the nations, including a 2-0 loss in the 1978 FIFA World Cup.

Michniewicz's men can take courage in the fact that they are unbeaten in three of their last four matches against Argentina though, having picked up one draw and two wins, including a 2-1 friendly victory in their most event encounter in June 2011.

Poland's third and only other victory over the Albicelestes came in their first FIFA World Cup encounter back in 1974, when a brace from Grzegorz Lato and Andrzej Szarmach's ninth-minute strike condemned the South American heavyweights to a 3-2 defeat.
