Port Vale and Gillingham are level at half time following finishes from Louis Dodds and Bradley Dack.
The Valiants started the better side with Ryan Inniss, on loan from Crystal Palace, almost scoring from close range in the first minute following a scramble in the box.
Sam Foley then came close for Port Vale with a free kick shortly after, but could only bend his shot wide of the post.
Gillingham went ahead 17 minutes in as Bradley Dack smashed a free-kick effort beyond Port Vale loanee keeper Jak Alnwick to make it 1-0.
The Valiants were keen to fight back, however, and were level 20 minutes later as Louis Dodds fired the ball into the back of the net after some good play from Anthony Grant and Byron Moore.
Port Vale continued to put pressure on the Gillingham defence in an effort to lead at half time, but both teams went in all square at the break.
