Five-star Portugal reach Euro 2015 final after destruction of Germany

Portugal Under-21s thrash Germany Under-21s 5-0 in Olomouc to reach the final of Euro 2015.

Portugal Under-21s have emphatically stormed into the final of Euro 2015 after ruthlessly dismantling Germany Under-21s 5-0 in their semi-final clash in Olomouc.

Rui Jorge's charges were dominant from the off and struck the post on the quarter-hour mark through captain Sergio Oliveira, who collected Ricardo's pullback and smashed an effort against the woodwork.

Despite this reprieve for Germany, there could be no complaints when Portugal took the lead 25 minutes in, as Bernardo Silva combined well with Ricardo down the left flank and fired past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Just eight minutes later, the Iberian nation doubled their lead, Silva's corner being flicked on by Paulo Oliveira, with Ricardo free at the back post to tap home.

Germany stepped it up a gear in the latter stages of the first half, most notably through Joshua Kimmich, whose strike was parried by Jose Sa in the direction of Nico Schulz, whose effort flew over.

Portugal, however, made it three on the stroke of half time as Ivan Cavaleiro fired a powerful shot from the edge of the area into the top corner.

Any team talk that Horst Hrubesch would have delivered in the changing rooms at the break was soon rendered null and void within less than a minute as the Iberian nation added a fourth.

William Carvalho collected the ball on the right-hand side of the area before setting up Joao Mario, whose drive took a deflection and floated past the helpless Ter Stegen.

From then on, there was only one side in the game, as a depleted and shellshocked Germany became increasingly unable to handle the Portuguese threat.

Indeed, the Esperancas added a fifth in the 71st minute, Ricardo Horta adding his name to the scoresheet after getting a deft touch on Joao Cancelo's cross from the left and lashing home.

Frustration soon got the better of the Germans, who were reduced to ten men just four minutes later when Leonardo Bittencourt was shown a second yellow for clipping Cancelo's leg.

The latter stages of the game were a mere formality for Portugal, who were able to celebrate a 21-year wait to reach the final of a European Under-21 Championship once again.

In stark contrast for Germany, the result condemns the Nationalelf, long touted as one of the tournament favourites, to their biggest ever defeat at this level.
