Lionel Messi ruled out of Monaco clash through illness

Paris Saint-Germain's Lionel Messi will miss Sunday afternoon's Ligue 1 clash with Monaco due to illness.

The 34-year-old played the full 90 minutes in the 3-0 win over Bordeaux last weekend but was booed by his own supporters throughout the contest alongside Neymar.

Messi has only struck two goals in 18 Ligue 1 games for Les Parisiens this season, but he nevertheless boasts a respectable total of seven goals and 11 assists in 26 games across all tournaments.

The Argentine will not get the chance to add to that tally on Sunday, though, with PSG's squad announcement confirming that he will not be with the squad for the trip to the Stade Louis II after catching the flu.

Keylor Navas has also come down with the same illness, while Sergio Ramos and Angel Di Maria are notable injury absentees with calf and hamstring issues respectively.

Mauricio Pochettino's side will aim to temporarily move 18 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 standings with victory over ninth-placed Monaco on Sunday lunchtime.
