Former Queens Park Rangers boss Mark Hughes rejects claims from midfielder Joey Barton that he failed to partly accept responsibility for the club's relegation last year.

Former Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Hughes has brushed off claims made by midfielder Joey Barton that he was fully responsible for the club suffering relegation to the Championship last season.

Hughes was sacked from his position at Loftus Road last November after his side failed to win any of their first 12 Premier League fixtures, and the Hoops were eventually relegated after picking up just four victories all season.

Earlier this week, Barton tweeted: "Accept you failed. Accept your to blame. Be humble and apologise to a club you left in a hell of a worse situation than when you came".

Hughes has insisted that he accepts he wasn't successful at the London outfit. The 50-year-old is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying: "The game is full of opinions. Joey seems to have a lot more opinions than most.

"It is one of those things. A lot of blame was placed at my door and I accepted it at the time, because I was party to something that unfortunately didn't go as well as everyone involved wanted it to go.

"It wasn't through the lack of trying. We all worked exceptionally hard to make it work, but sometimes the dynamic of a dressing room doesn't allow it to work. That is what happened. Joey has a view, I have a view as well on Joey - but I keep my thoughts to myself."

Hughes is now in charge of Stoke City, who are currently sitting in 10th position in the Premier League table.
