Jamie Mackie insists that Queens Park Rangers are in a better position to avoid relegation from the Premier League following the deadline-day signings of Christopher Samba and Andros Townsend.

Jamie Mackie has applauded the performances of Queens Park Rangers debutants Christopher Samba and Andros Townsend during the 0-0 draw with Norwich City.

The pair, along with Jermaine Jenas, made their first Hoops appearances since completing their transfer deadline-day moves in the Loftus Road stalemate.

Mackie was impressed by Tottenham Hotspur loanee Townsend, but highlighted the acquisition of Samba as key to QPR's survival hopes following the exit of defender Ryan Nelsen, who has left to take up the management post at Toronto FC.

"It was good for the new lads to get a run out, they're only going to help the squad," said Mackie. "Things are certainly looking better for us. Andros is direct and he's willing to take players on, that's what we need. He looked lively and he's a youngster so he plays with no fear.

"Nellie [Nelsen] has been absolutely tremendous for us, as has Clint Hill, so we needed someone to come in and replace Nellie and luckily we have managed to do that with someone of Chris's stature.

"He's a monster, a powerful boy and hopefully he can score a few goals for us as well. If we can hang the ball up not too many people are going to beat him in the air."

Rangers are currently bottom of the top-flight table, six points from safety.
