Daniel Cousin's move to Rangers is in major doubt as the deal was not completed prior to the club applying for administration.
The Gers announced on Monday that a deal to sign the 35-year-old had been done, subject to international clearance.
On the same day, it emerged that the Ibrox club were filing for administration.
Rangers were officially handed over to administrators today, meaning that restrictions regarding the registering of players have been automatically put into place.
A statement from Scottish Premier League tonight read: "The SPL can confirm the application has been received for the registration of Daniel Cousin.
"The player has not yet been registered with the SPL and we intend to discuss that application with the administrators of Rangers FC this week."
Rangers have been docked ten points, handing Celtic a 14-point lead in the SPL.
