Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday.

The better chances came for the visitors, but a strong defensive performance from Atletico ensured that the tie would remain delicately poised ahead of the second leg, which will take place next Wednesday.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at how each player performed in Madrid.

ATLETICO

Goal

Jan Oblak: Made an outstanding save to deny Gareth Bale early on, and was tested eight times in total. Handling was excellent during what was a man-of-the-match performance from the stopper. (9/10)

Defence

Juanfran: Did not have too many chances to break forward in the first period, but he delivered some telling crosses in the second half. Helped stifle Real Madrid after the interval. (7/10)

Diego Godin: Made one mistake early on that allowed Bale through on goal, but the centre-back recovered to produce an outstanding performance. Won almost everything inside the box. (8/10)

Miranda: Preferred to Jose Gimenez and the Brazilian justified the selection. Was so impressive alongside Godin last season and he helped keep Karim Benzema very quiet in this one. (7/10)

Guilherme Siqueira: Arguably his side's most potent threat in the first half as he broke forward time and time again. That said, the Brazilian's delivery from wide positions was not always the best. (7/10)

Midfield

Koke: Kept things neat and tidy in the middle of the park, but the Spaniard's usually excellent delivery from set pieces was a little disappointing. Was replaced by Torres late on. (6/10)

Gabi: Not having the best of seasons and the skipper struggled to make an impression in the middle of the park. Improved in the second period, but still short of his best form. (6/10)

Mario Suarez: Like a number of his teammates, the Spaniard struggled to make his mark in the first period, but there was an improvement in the second. Picked up a late booking. (6/10)

Attack

Arda Turan: Showed his excellence with a stunning run in the second period, while the Turkish international was always prepared to help out defensively, especially late on. (7/10)

Mario Mandzukic: Contested everything in the air, but all the striker's good work will be overshadowed by his long-running feud with the two Real Madrid centre-backs in the second period. (6/10)

Antoine Griezmann: Has been excellent for long spells of this season, but it did not really happen for the Frenchman here. Headed a good chance over the crossbar in the first half. (6/10)

Substitutes

Raul Garcia: Came on after 77 minutes, but his only real contribution was picking up a yellow card. Put himself about, but the Spaniard's lack of match sharpness showed. (6/10)

Fernando Torres: Only given the final seven minutes or so, but the Spaniard made a real impression. Had one excellent run and caused havoc inside the Real Madrid box. (7/10)

REAL MADRID

Goal

Iker Casillas: Had his feet up for the majority of the first period, but was called into action in the second. Dealt impressively with a number of crosses and was solid, despite a nervy moment late on. (6/10)

Defence

Dani Carvajal: Was heavily involved in the first period as he linked with Bale in a wide area, while the Spaniard was solid defensively before being replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa late on. (7/10)

Sergio Ramos: Dealt impressively with the physical threat of Mandzukic, while the Spaniard was calm and composed in possession of the ball. In this form, one of the best in the world. (8/10)

Raphael Varane: Preferred to Pepe in the XI and the French centre-back was outstanding. Showed his incredible pace on a number of occasions and was brilliant in the air. (8/10)

Marcelo: Was up and down the left all evening for Real Madrid. Did not have too much work to do defensively in Madrid, but was always an option in the final third of the field. (7/10)

Midfield

Luka Modric: Had an excellent chance towards the end of the first period, but fired high and wide of the crossbar. Always prepared to take control of the ball in tight positions. (7/10)

Toni Kroos: Not always involved in terms of attacking moments, but the German always keeps things ticking over in the middle of the park. Plays such a crucial role. (7/10)

James Rodriguez: Only just returned from a broken foot, but the Colombian has settled straight back into the action. Brought a good save from Oblak in the first half and was a threat all night. (7/10)

Attack

Gareth Bale: Had the game's outstanding chance after four minutes, but could not beat Oblak. Was a threat in the first period, but faded as the match developed. (6/10)

Karim Benzema: Had a disappointing night in Madrid. Was involved in some decent attacking moves, but the striker's tough was too heavy on a number of occasions. Subbed late on. (5/10)

Cristiano Ronaldo: Strangely subdued night for the Portuguese, who only really had a couple of half-chances and long-range free kicks. Found it difficult at the Calderon. (6/10)

Substitutes

Isco: Was thrown on for Benzema in the 76th minute, but the Spaniard found it difficult to make an impression. Neat and tidy, but not enough time to make his mark. (6/10)

Alvaro Arbeloa: Replaced Carvajal at right-back for the final five minutes and made a really smart block late on to deny Mandzukic, who had fired one from the edge of the box. (6/10)
