Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and provided two assists as Real Madrid made sure of top spot in Group A with a 4-3 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday.

A double from Ronaldo and early second-half goals from Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal saw Real Madrid take a 4-0 lead in Ukraine, but a late rally from Shakhtar almost turned the game on its head.

Alex Teixeira scored either side of a Dentinho effort to set up a grandstand finish, but the home side could not find a fourth in stoppage time as they lost their fourth match in the section.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at how each player performed in Ukraine.

SHAKHTAR

Goal

Andriy Pyatov: Did not cover himself in glory for Real Madrid's first and had a couple of dodgy moments from crosses. Not solely to blame, but did not exactly inspire much confidence. (5/10)

Defence

Vasyl Kobin: Tasked with supporting his midfield from a full-back position, but the 30-year-old struggled to make his mark. Did not look comfortable when Bale went through the gears. (5/10)

Ivan Ordets: A block from Raphael Varane prevented him from potentially scoring in the first period, while the centre-back was arguably his team's best defender throughout the contest. (6/10)

Yaroslav Rakitskiy: Had a couple of wild attempts from free kicks in the first period and struggled to deal with the likes of Ronaldo and Bale in the final third. Not his finest evening for Shakhtar. (5/10)

Marcio Azevedo: Was never afraid to get forward in the first period when Shakhtar were in possession of the ball, but the full-back was caught out for Real Madrid's second and third. (6/10)

Midfield

Fred: The game almost passed him by for long spells, but like a number of his teammates, he came good in the final 20 minutes - winning a number of important tackles in the middle of the park. (6/10)

Alex Teixeira: Had a difficult first period due to Real Madrid's domination of the ball, but burst into life in the final 20 minutes - first scoring from the spot, before converting an excellent second goal. (8/10)

Taras Stepanenko: Hit-and-miss evening. Picked up a booking during a difficult first period, but played a key role in his team's comeback late on. Some bad moments, but some good ones too. (6/10)

Attack

Marlos: Tasked with operating on the right of the Shakhtar attack, but the Brazilian saw little of the ball in the first period and was replaced just past the hour in the home side's first change. (5/10)

Oleksandr Gladkiy: Came close on a couple of occasions in the first period, with his presence causing problems. Faded after the break, however, and was replaced for the final 15 minutes. (6/10)

Bernard: Was Shakhtar's best player in the first period, with the home side's threat coming from the Brazilian. Continued to cause problems in the second half with his pace and movement. (7/10)

Substitutes

Taison: Could not have done much more in his 30 minutes. Completely controlled the game late on as Shakhtar scored three times - winning the penalty and also setting up Teixeira's second. (8/10)

Dentinho: Another of Shakhtar's substitutes to make a difference, the Brazilian was in the right place at the right time to score the home side's second with a chested finish from close range. (7/10)

Facundo Ferreyra: Introduced in the 74th minute and Shakhtar scored twice when the forward was on the field. Gave Real Madrid's defence something more to think about in the latter stages. (6/10)

REAL MADRID

Goal

Kiko Casilla: Had a difficult night between the sticks. All three of Shakhtar's attempts on target were goals and the Spaniard flapped at a number of crosses. Not in the same class as Keylor Navas. (5/10)

Defence

Dani Carvajal: Scored Real Madrid's third of the night with an effort that looked to be a cross, but the right-back struggled defensively late on, with his lack of game-time in recent weeks showing. (6/10)

Pepe: Should have been the organiser in the Real Madrid defence, but the Portuguese was ultimately part of the defence that were shambolic late on. Was not as decisive as he should have been. (6/10)

Raphael Varane: Made a couple of vital blocks in the early exchanges, but his night ended in disappointment after leaving the field with an injury in just the 32nd minute of action. (7/10)

Nacho: Started the game at left-back and looked pretty comfortable, but was moved inside when Varane went off injured and he also failed to organise the defence during the latter stages. (5/10)

Midfield

Mateo Kovacic: Has struggled for regular football this season and despite moving the ball well for long spells, the Croatian failed to make a serious and lasting impression on the match. (6/10)

Casemiro: Had a fairly comfortable game for long spells, but was really untidy in the latter stages and gave away a penalty for a late challenge on Taison. Bit of a mixed bag for the Brazilian. (6/10)

Luka Modric: Was replaced for the final 30 minutes, but had a wonderful game in the first hour. Everything went through the Croatian, who scored his team's second early in the second period. (8/10)

Attack

Isco: Not the Spaniard's best performance and he will now sit out Real Madrid's next two league games through suspension. Was not quick enough on the ball when the visitors countered. (6/10)

Cristiano Ronaldo: Once again the star of the show. Two goals and two assists for the Portuguese, who quietened his critics with a super performance. Still the main man in this team. (9/10)

Gareth Bale: Much more like it from the Welshman, who set up both of Ronaldo's goals and also came close on a couple of occasions himself. Not on the field when Shakhtar scored their three goals. (8/10)

Substitutes

Danilo: Brought on at left-back when Varane went off injured, but the Brazilian did not look comfortable. Was not involved in the final third and struggled when Shakhtar upped the tempo. (5/10)

Toni Kroos: Has been disappointing in recent weeks and the German could not make his mark in the final 30 minutes here. Had the look of a player that is in need of a rest. (6/10)

Karim Benzema: Given the final 20 minutes, but the Frenchman had the look of a player that is still struggling to overcome a recent injury. Hardly touched the ball in the latter stages of the match. (6/10)
