Diego Simeone's managerial record vs. Real Madrid

Sports Mole looks at Diego Simeone's managerial record against Real Madrid ahead of Atletico Madrid's clash with their rivals on Sunday night.

Atletico Madrid will be looking to end Real Madrid's 100% start to the 2022-23 campaign when the Red and Whites welcome their bitter rivals in La Liga on Sunday night.

Colchoneros have won three, drawn one and lost one of their five league games this season, which has let them in seventh spot in the table, five points behind Los Blancos.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone has tackled Real Madrid on a number of occasions since being appointed head coach of the Spanish giants in 2011.

The 52-year-old will know the task facing his side this weekend, with Real Madrid the reigning Spanish and European champions, while Carlo Ancelotti's team have also won all eight of their games across three separate competitions this term, including the UEFA Super Cup.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at Simeone's record against Los Blancos.

Real Madrid are the team that Simeone has managed against most in his career, facing them on 36 occasions as a head coach, boasting a record of 10 wins, 11 draws and 15 defeats.

Simeone's first ever game against Los Blancos as Atletico boss came back in April 2012, with the Red and Whites suffering a 4-1 home defeat to their bitter rivals in La Liga.

The Argentine's first victory over Real Madrid was actually the Copa del Rey final in May 2013, with Atletico recording a 2-1 win to lift the trophy - Simeone's first since arriving at the club as head coach.

Real Madrid and Atletico also famously met in the final of the 2013-14 Champions League, with Los Blancos running out 4-1 winners to secure the trophy.

The Whites also got the better of their rivals in the quarter-finals of the 2014-15 Champions League, running out 1-0 winners on aggregate to reach the final four.

Simeone lost another Champions League final to Real Madrid in 2016, with Los Blancos winning 6-4 on penalties after the two sides had played out a 1-1 draw.

Real Madrid then won 4-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals of the 2016-17 Champions League, but Simeone's Atletico did manage to beat Los Blancos 4-2 in the UEFA Super Cup in August 2018.

As expected, the majority of Simeone's games against Real Madrid have come in the league, with the reigning champions enjoying a lot of success over the Argentine.

Indeed, the 1-0 victory for Atletico at Wanda Metropolitano back in May proved to be the first time that Simeone had beaten Real Madrid in the league since February 2016.

The former midfielder has had a brilliant career at Atletico as head coach, winning two league titles, one Copa del Rey and two Europa League trophies among others, but he has only managed to lead the team to 10 wins in his 36 matches against the 14-time European champions. body check tags ::
