Mario Mandzukic scores as Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the second leg of the Super Cup to seal a 2-1 aggregate win.

Atletico Madrid have won the Spanish Super Cup for the first time in 29 years following a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

The scores were tied at 1-1 following Tuesday's first leg at the Bernabeu, but it took less than two minutes for the hosts to make the breakthrough, as Mario Mandzukic latched on to Antoine Griezmann's flick-on before firing a strike into the bottom corner.

Madrid were close to a response midway through the first half when James Rodriguez was played through by Daniel Carvajal, but the Colombian saw his low effort stopped by Miguel Moya.

Moments later Atletico manager Diego Simeone was sent to the stands for patting the assistant referee on the back of the head.

The visitors began to dominate as the first half wore on and Rodriguez threatened again when he headed Carvajal's cross just past the post, before Gareth Bale drilled a low effort wide from the edge of the box.

Raul Garcia should have doubled the home side's lead in the final minute of the first half, but after meeting Gabi's corner he could only direct his header over.

Atletico came close to adding a second goal just minutes after the break when Garcia headed Koke's free kick onto the bar.

Garcia was proving to be a handful for the Madrid defence and he was unlucky to see his curling effort from outside the box head narrowly wide of the far post.

Cristiano Ronaldo had the first chance of the second half for the visitors, but his long-range strike was comfortably saved by Moya.

The hosts were looking the more likely of the teams to score the next goal and Koke saw his powerful effort from range swing narrowly wide, before Griezmann dragged a shot off target.

Madrid were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Luka Modric was sent off for a late challenge on Cristian Rodriguez, as the hosts held on to win the cup with a 2-1 aggregate win.
