Bristol City strikers Matt Smith and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas score the goals against Fleetwood Town to send their side back to the top of the League One table.

Bristol City regained top spot in League One this afternoon thanks to Matt Smith and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas scoring second-half goals against Fleetwood Town at Ashton Gate.

The Robins were replaced at the summit yesterday by MK Dons, but Steve Cotterill's men now lead the way by two points again.

In what was an entertaining opening half, the home side went closest to breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute when Fleetwood goalkeeper Chris Maxwell turned Kieran Agard's effort on to the crossbar.

Then, as the half drew to a close, Aden Flint rose highest to meet captain Wade Elliott's corner, but the danger was hacked clear following a goalmouth scramble.

Despite those first-half disappointments, it took the home side just seven minutes after the restart to find the net.

Winger Joe Bryan earned himself enough space to send over a cross and, when the Fleetwood defence failed to snuff out the danger, Smith pounced to score his 11th goal in 14 City appearances from close range.

In reply, Blackburn Rovers loanee Josh Morris attempted to level up the score from a set piece, but Frank Fielding was equal to his effort in the home goal.

It proved to be Fleetwood's only meaningful attempt over the remainder of the game, while the home side made sure of the points in stoppage time courtesy of substitute Emmanuel-Thomas.
