Ricky van Wolfswinkel has scored only his second goal for Norwich City as he helped the Canaries to a hard-fought Capital One Cup victory at Rotherham United.
The visitors had the first chance inside the opening five minutes when Andre Wisdom, making his first start of the season, cut inside onto his left foot before failing to test Millers keeper Adam Collin.
Rotherham nearly took the lead midway through the opening period only for Declan Rudd to stop Jonson Clarke-Harris's goalbound header.
Instead, it was Norwich who edged in front after a Jonny Howson rounded off a swift counter-attack with a low drive that was beyond the reach of Collin.
United looked for a quick equaliser and arguably had their best chances of the half when Emmanuel Ledesma's strike from outside the box forced Rudd into another stop before John Ruddy's understudy was alert enough to save from Lewis Buxton's effort seconds later.
On the stroke of half time, Van Wolfswinkel almost capped his first start of the season with a goal when the Dutchman fired a low shot that Collin was able to tip away.
Rudd was called into action again early in the second half as he thwarted Greg Halford and Joe Newell in quick succession to deny Rotherham a way back into the tie.
However, Norwich managed to put daylight between themselves and Rotherham midway through the second period when Van Wolfswinkel slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the Millers net.
Paul Green scored with 10 minutes left to give the Yorkshiremen hope of forcing extra time, but Alex Neil's side were able to hold out for a place in the third round.
