Brazilian right-back Dani Alves has left boyhood club Sao Paulo and has become a free agent, amid a dispute regarding his salary.

The 38-year-old joined the six-time Campeonato Brasileiro champions in August 2019, following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, and became the highest paid player in South America.

However, Sao Paulo have since announced that Alves will not play for the club as the veteran defender is demanding the club pay him £2.6m.

Alves has not been paid in full by Sao Paulo over the last two seasons due to the club struggling financially, which is why the full-back is requesting such a figure.

After several weeks of deliberation between both parties, Sao Paulo released the following statement: "We were informed by his representatives that Daniel Alves will not return to Sao Paulo until there is an adjustment of the financial debt that Sao Paulo has with the player."

Alves's contract was due to expire in December 2022, but the Brazilian has now become a free agent and according to the Daily Mail, he has been linked with a move to the MLS, clubs in the Middle East, as well as Argentine giants Boca Juniors and River Plate.

The former Barcelona man is now hoping to sign for a new club soon, as he aims to make Tite's Brazil squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. body check tags ::
