Sports Mole previews Monday's National League clash between Southend United and Weymouth, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Southend United will be bidding to return to winning ways in the National League when they welcome Weymouth to Roots Hall on Monday afternoon.

The Blues will enter the contest off the back of a 1-0 defeat at Wrexham on Saturday, while Weymouth suffered a 4-2 home loss to Solihull Moors on the same afternoon.

Match preview

Southend took a three-game winning run into Saturday's clash at Wrexham, having beaten Barnet, Halifax Town and Boreham Wood in quick succession, but they could not make it four victories in a row, losing 1-0 to the team that sits second in the table.

The Blues were expected to challenge for a return to the Football League this season, but it has been a largely disappointing campaign, with the club currently sitting down in 12th spot in the table on 56 points.

The Essex club will once again be a National League outfit side next term, but they will be keen to give their supporters something to shout about in their final two matches of the campaign, which both come at home to Weymouth and Torquay United respectively.

Kevin Maher's side have won 10 of their 20 home league games this term, picking up 33 points in the process, and they will be welcoming a Weymouth outfit with the second-worst away record in the National League, having picked up just eight points from their 20 matches on their travels.

Weymouth, meanwhile, will enter this match off the back of a 4-2 home defeat to Solihull Motors on Saturday afternoon; the home side found themselves 3-0 down in the 69th minute and simply could not recover despite managing to score two goals of their own in the final exchanges.

The visitors have already been relegated to the National League South, with a total of 24 points from 41 matches leaving them in 22nd position in the table.

Weymouth have only won five league matches all season, suffering 27 defeats in the process, while they have conceded 84 times, which is the second-worst record in the division behind basement side Dover.

David Oldfield's side will already be planning for next season but will want to give their fans something to be positive about in their final three matches of the campaign, with their last home fixture set to take place next weekend against Barnet before heading to Dover on May 15.

Team News

Southend boss Maher selected an unchanged side for the clash with Wrexham on Saturday, although there was a spot on the bench for fit-again Will Atkinson.

Kenny Clark, Tom Clifford and Noor Husin all missed out through injury, though, and the trio remain doubts for the contest at Roots Hall on Monday afternoon.

It would not be a surprise to see the same XI take to the field once again, with Sam Dalby and Harry Cardwell featuring as the front two, as the performance at Wrexham was a positive one despite the defeat.

As for Weymouth, the visitors did not suffer any fresh injury problems in their defeat to Solihull on Saturday, but head coach Oldfield will need to assess the fitness of his squad due to the quick turnaround.

Omar Mussa will be pushing to feature, having been named on the bench last time out, and the 21-year-old could come into a midfield area, while Aaron Drewe could be handed a start at the back.

Southend United possible starting lineup:
Arnold; Gubbins, Hobson, Davies, Kensdale; Demetriou, Neal, Bridge, Dunne; Dalby, Cardwell

Weymouth possible starting lineup:
Fitzsimons; Drewe, Blair, Carlyle, Cordner; Goodship, Mussa, McQuoid, Mnoga; Murray, Shields

We say: Southend United 2-0 Weymouth

Southend had been in strong form ahead of their defeat to Wrexham, but the same cannot be said for Weymouth, who have now conceded 10 times in their last two matches. Southend's recent home form has been impressive, meanwhile, so we are expecting the Blues to secure all three points here.
