Germany, meanwhile, fell to a shock 2-1 defeat against Japan and must now avoid defeat against their most illustrious group-stage opponents to stand any chance of going through to the knockout phase.
The clash at the Al Bayt Stadium will be the 26th encounter between the teams, and there is little to separate them ahead of tomorrow's contest.
Germany boast nine victories across all competitions compared to Spain's eight, while the spoils have been shared on eight occasions.
However, Hansi Flick's men are unbeaten in three of the four World Cup matches between the teams, although they did lose the last meeting at this level back in 2010 when a Carles Puyol header got the job done.
The 2014 world champions avoided defeat in the subsequent three clashes against the team they succeeded at the time before being on the receiving end of a 6-0 demolition in the most recent duel two years ago.
Ferran Torres grabbed a superb hat-trick on the day, with Alvaro Morata, Rodri and Mikel Oyarzabal also getting on the scoresheet for Spain.
