Sports Mole selects a combined XI ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

Tottenham Hotspur will welcome Manchester City to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

It will be the first ever European meeting between the two teams, but they are, of course, used to locking horns in domestic fixtures.

City will enter the two-legged tie as the favourites to progress to the semi-finals, but Tottenham will feel that a strong result in the first leg will stand them in good stead ahead of their trip to the Etihad Stadium.

There will be 22 very talented footballers lining up on the field at the start of the match and 14 more stars on the benches.

With that in mind, Sports Mole has selected a combined XI from both squads, using only players available for Tuesday night's clash.

Both Ederson and Hugo Lloris are excellent goalkeepers, but the choice in this team is not all that difficult. Ederson has kept 22 clean sheets in all competitions for City this term, while Lloris has managed just 13 shutouts in all competitions. The former is also the superior player with the ball at this feet, and it would probably be fair to say that Lloris makes too many mistakes to be regarded amongst the best stoppers in world football.

We have gone with a back three in a 3-4-3 formation, with neither Tottenham nor City boasting outstanding full-backs in terms of the elite level. Aymeric Laporte takes the first spot, with the 24-year-old quite quickly developing into one of the best centre-backs in the world. He has been pretty much an ever-present for City this season when fit and is named ahead of the likes of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi in this XI.

The other two centre-back spots are handed to Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. Both will see their contracts at Tottenham expire next summer, which is a concern for the London club. Much has been made of Tottenham's lack of spending, but they boast two of the best central defenders in the European game. Alongside Laporte, the pair form what would be a very talented back three.

Further forward is where it becomes more interesting, with both teams having a whole host of outstanding options. First and foremost the team needs a holding midfielder and Fernandinho absolutely sails into the XI. City are going to have some task when it comes to replacing the Brazilian, who is one of the finest of his kind in the world. Alongside the South American sits Tottenham's Christian Eriksen. Much has been made of the Denmark international's future and he might well leave this summer. The 27-year-old has eight goals and 14 assists in all competitions this term, though, and edges out the likes of Dele Alli and Ilkay Gundogan.

One of the toughest decisions was to leave out David Silva, who is one of the finest footballers to ever grace the Premier League. There had to be a degree of balance, though, and it makes more sense considering that Kevin De Bruyne is included. The Belgian has had his knee problems this season, but appears to be coming into his best form at the right time, which is absolutely terrible news for City's rivals.

The final midfield role goes to Bernardo Silva. Boasting 11 goals and 12 assists in 42 appearances this season, the Portuguese is having another fine season for the Citizens. There is a reason why Pep Guardiola picks him for almost every big match and to be honest, he absolutely sails into this starting XI due to his quality and ability to contribute.

A number of brilliant players have been left out of the front three, but in truth, it was quite straightforward to pick. Raheem Sterling has been outstanding both on and off the field this season and was the first name on the teamsheet here. The 24-year-old has 19 goals and 16 assists in all competitions this term and there is not a club in world football who would not love to have the England international in their side.

Sterling is joined by City teammate Sergio Aguero, who has 29 goals in all competitions this season. The Argentine is expected to shake off a slight injury to lead the away side's attack. Aguero has enjoyed a stunning career in English football and will be looking to lead his team to a famous quadruple this season.

The final spot in the front three and indeed in the team goes to Harry Kane. The 25-year-old has 24 goals in 38 appearances this season and will be key to Tottenham's chances of success over the two legs. Boasting five Champions League goals this term, Kane simply could not be left out of what is a very talented XI.
