Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur picked up a rare victory at Wembley Stadium, overcoming Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in their Champions League opener.
The English striker restored his side's advantage 15 minutes in after Andriy Yarmolenko cancelled out Son Heung-min's near-post finish.
A second of the evening for Kane, and a third for Tottenham, arrived on the hour through a well-taken strike just moments after the visitors wrongly had a goal ruled out.

Hello and welcome to Sports Mole's live text coverage of the Champions League tie between Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium. The Lilywhites are aiming to end what is turning into quite some hoodoo at their temporary home this evening, having won just one of their last 11 matches here over the past nine years.
Dortmund, back at the scene of their 2013 Champions League final defeat to rivals Bayern Munich, have made it through to the knockout stages of this competition in each of their past four involvements and are much-fancied to do likewise again this time around. Group H is certainly one of the toughest, as defending champions Real Madrid and Cypriot giants APOEL are also looking to progress.

The big team news as far as the home side are concerned is the inclusion of Serge Aurier in defence for his Tottenham Hotspur debut. The Ivory Coast international was recruited from Paris Saint-Germain a fortnight ago, bringing plenty of baggage with him, and he is given the chance to show exactly what all the hype is about in front of his new supporters for the first time tonight.
The Lilywhites have also been boosted by the inclusion of Mousa Dembele, who was very much touch-and-go his evening due to his ongoing ankle problems, while Heung-Min Son is the other player to come in from the 3-0 win over Everton last time out. Kieran Trippier, Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli are the men to make way, the latter missing out due to a three-match ban that has carried over from his dismissal against Gent in February.
Erik Lamela (hip), Danny Rose and Victory Wanyama (both knee) remain absent for the home side, but this is still a strong-looking XI named by boss Mauricio Pochettino. The squad was bolstered in the closing stages of the summer transfer window, and two of the new arrivals - Juan Foyth and Fernando Llorente - are waiting in reserve tonight. Harry Kane, who has two Champions League goals to his name, leads the line.

In terms of the visitors, manager Peter Bosz - managing in the Champions League proper for the first time tonight - has made five changes to the side that was held to a goalless draw by Freiburg at the weekend. Yarmolenko, Toprak and Tolijan all come in for their full debuts, so BVB may be a tad disjointed from the off - something for Spurs to cling on to in what will otherwise be a tough match.
Castro, Gotze and Philip each drop down to the bench, while Neven Subotic is also included in the squad after recovering from an illness that had put his participation in doubt. Just the one survivor in the starting lineup who was involved the last time Dortmund played at Wembley Stadium, meanwhile - experienced full-back Lukasz Piszczek. Full debutant Jeremy Toljan is used on the opposite flank.
Bosz will likely set his side out in a 4-3-3 formation, spearheaded by a certain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was close to joining Spurs six years ago but saw a move collapse late on. Andriy Yarmolenko will start to the right of him, while the hugely exciting Christian Pulisic is over on the left. An energetic midfield trio will look to pull the strings from deep, including former Manchester United man Shinji Kagawa.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has made three changes to the side that saw off Everton 3-0 at the weekend, including a first appearance at the back for Serge Aurier. Five alterations as far as the visitors are concerned, meanwhile, with experienced full-back Lukasz Piszczek the sole survivor from Borussia Dortmund's defeat to Bayern Munich here in the 2013 final.
Tottenham are now longer novices in the Champions League, as they have made it to the group stage three times in the past seven years and twice in successive years. It is the first time that they have achieved the feat of back-to-back qualifications, thanks to their consistent league form under boss Pochettino. They made it all the way to the quarters the first time they reached this level, but they were out at the first hurdle last term.
Pochettino has turned Tottenham into such a force over the past couple of years that reaching the group stage of the Champions League is almost seen as the minimum target these days. The Lilywhites impressed in the English top flight once against last time around, falling narrowly short when up against a real force in Chelsea. Finishing top was their main target, of course, but qualifying for UEFA's showpiece competition is not a bad back-up prize.
Tottenham struggled in Europe last season, however, collecting seven points from a possible 18 to finish behind AS Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen. Monaco may have gone on to reach the semis, overcoming Dortmund on the way, but that was a group that the Lilywhites were expected to progress out of. Not so this time around, as they have been put in a group with BVB, Real Madrid and APOEL.
Not only did Tottenham exit the Champions League at the group stage, they also crashed out of the Europa League at the first knockout-stage hurdle at the hands of Gent; a defeat that is still being felt now as influential midfielder Dele Alli picked up a three-match ban, carried into the first half of this European campaign. It is just the two wins in their last nine UCL fixtures, in fact - a record that needs improving on.
Performing at Wembley is becoming a serious problem for Tottenham, winning just one of four here last season when overcoming CSKA Moscow. It is just the two wins in 12 overall at the national stadium since it opened nearly a decade ago; one in their last 11 when discounting the first match they played here - an EFL Cup final triumph over Chelsea. Most recently, Pochettino's men threw away two points when being pegged back 1-1 by Burnley in a league match.
Tottenham managed to get back on track at the weekend thanks to a 3-0 win over Everton, courtesy of a couple of goals - one a fluke - from Harry Kane. The England international has put his own hoodoo to one side, one which has seen him fail to bag a league goal for the club in the month of August, and he is now looking back to his best. Top scorer in successive seasons, while also hitting at least 20 three years in a row, Kane is hoping to cement his place as one of the top striking talents in world football.
Pochettino will be hoping that his side can put some more points on the board between now and the next international break in a few weeks' time, with a run of winnable fixtures to come. After hosting Swansea City here next weekend, they then face West Ham United, Huddersfield Town and Bournemouth - 12 points from 12 will surely be the target from those, albeit with a tricky-looking trip to their near neighbours to take into account.
All focus for now in on Europe, though, where Spurs are looking to make a similar impact to seven years ago when making it to the quarter-final stage. Defeat to Real Madrid brought that campaign to an end, and they come up against Los Blancos - winners of this competition in three of the last four seasons - once again in Group H. A trip to APOEL is up next, before welcoming the Spanish giants to Wembley next month.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS! These two sides have met on just one occasion in the past, coming at the last-16 stage of the Europe League in 2015-16 when Borussia Dortmund prevailed 5-1 winners on aggregate. BVB picked up a 3-0 win in Germany and then triumphed 2-1 at White Hart Lane, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bagging three and Marco Reus - absent today - a couple of his own.
Wembley Stadium does not quite feel like home for Tottenham Hotspur just yet, it is fair to say, as they have won just one of their last 11 games here in all competitions. That run stretches back some nine years and includes a home loss to Chelsea and a disappointing 1-1 draw against Burnley so far this season in the Premier League. That hoodoo has to end sooner or later... surely?
Pochettino talked in the build-up to this match about a fast start being required to the group stage. The stats certainly back that up - 74% of teams who lose their opening fixture go on to be eliminated from the competition. Ten points tends to be the average required to bag a place in the knockout stage, though with the four sides expected to take points off each other, a lesser total may be enough.
Tottenham have yet to win on matchday one in the Champions League, though, and they are up against a side with proven pedigree. BVB reached the final in 2013, going down to Bayern Munich in an entertaining clash at Wembley Stadium, while also going all the way in 1997. Pochettino, managing in the competition for a second season, will certainly be hoping that his players have gained some experience ahead of this latest foray in Europe.
DID YOU KNOW? Tottenham Hotspur have played German opposition 20 times before, losing eight and winning nine of those, while most recently being held to a goalless draw away to Bayer Leverkusen in 2016-17. Borussia Dortmund have won 11 of 23 against English teams, meanwhile, although they most recently lost 4-3 on aggregate to Liverpool in a thrilling Europa League quarter-final tie last year.
Dortmund are appearing in the group stage for the 12th time - the sixth time in seven years - which is still some way behind Bayern Munich on 21 involvements. They certainly have the knack of getting the job done, making it through to the knockout stage four times running, including in 2013 when they fell just short in the final. BVB were also paired with Madrid last season, but they finished top of that group with four wins and two draws.
Die Borussen, then under the management of Thomas Tuchel, would see their run ended at the last-16 stage by AS Monaco in 2016-17; a match that was overshadowed by an attempted bomb attack on the Dortmund team coach. The 1997 winners are one of just three German sides to have gone all the way on the continent, along with Bayern (five times) and Hamburg (once). Peter Bosz is now the man at the helm, taking over in the summer after leading Ajax to the Europa League final.
Bosz has made a solid start to life at the Westfalenstadion, remaining unbeaten in his first four games in all competition. Two wins from two in the Bundesliga, as well as victory in the early throes of the German Cup, gave him the dream start, but a goalless draw at Freiburg on Saturday has put the brakes on slightly. A surprise defeat for Bayern at Hoffenheim ensures that BVB are joint-top of the division.
Dortmund won 6-0 away to Legia Warsaw 12 months ago to get their European campaign off to the best of starts, and with Aubameyang in their ranks scoring goals does not usually tend to be a problem. The Gabon international said earlier this week that he has "extra motivation" to score against the Lilywhites tonight after they failed to get a deal over the line for him in 2012. Tottenham's loss was very much Dortmund's gain the following year.
With kickoff in the English capital now less than five minutes away, it is time to check out some pre-match thoughts from both camps.
Mauricio Pochettino: "I think Wednesday is so important, to start well in the competition and get the three points will be key to the future. In theory it should be Real Madrid first and the others trying for second, but football is not about theory. Our ambition is to win every game. Real Madrid are on a different level: they won the last two Champions Leagues so it's a different reality. I think it'll be a very competitive group."
Peter Bosz: "For the way in which we play we need to train regularly. I believe that my players understand better what I want. But it could also be the case that we concede three or four goals from time to time with our attacking style. My players are playing well and they have confidence going into the Champions League game against Tottenham. They also have confidence in the way we play and that is very important."
Pochettino talking up the importance of picking up all three points this evening, then, which comes back to that stat mentioned a little earlier - 74% of teams who lose on matchday one go on to exit the competition. Is it a case of must-not-lose? When taking into account this reverse fixture and a couple of games against Real Madrid, the Lilywhites really should be targeting maximum points tonight.
KICKOFF! Tottenham Hotspur get us up and running against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium, which is still in the process of filling up. An early clearance in the final third for Toprak, who won here with Bayer Leverkusen last season.
Both teams wearing their tradition home kits this evening, incidentally, as there is no risk of a clash. Dortmund the side knocking the ball around now, although they are not showing too much intent and are still inside their own half.
GOAL! TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1-0 BORUSSIA DORTMUND (SON HEUNG-MIN)
Son proved to be one of Tottenham's most important players last season with 21 goals to his name, and he has bagged another vital one here to give his side the breakthrough. No idea how he scored, though, somehow beating Roman Burki at his front post from a tight angle.
Burki has yet to concede in the Bundesliga but he has had a bit of a howler early on here. Son managed to pick out the back of the net from the tight angle after working his way into the box, and now the hosts have a lead to protect.
Dortmund's first real attacking move of the match almost leads to a leveller. The ball came in from the right and Aubameyang so nearly got there first, only for Alderweireld to produce a big challenge in front of goal to block him.
GOAL! TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1-1 BORUSSIA DORTMUND (ANDRIY YARMOLENKO)
A stunning goal from Andriy Yarmolenko, marking his debut with a curler into the top corner. Dortmund have thrown plenty of bodies forward since going behind and they have been rewarded thanks to that attempt from the edge of the box.
GOAL! TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2-1 BORUSSIA DORTMUND (HARRY KANE)
Yet again Burki is caught out at his front post! Two shots from Tottenham, both from tight angles, and both have ended in the back of the net. Kane took it past a couple of players and put his foot through the ball, but Burki really should have kept it out.
Less than a quarter of the game played and we already have three goals, pretty much from the only three attacks of the match. Dortmund look good when they do get bodies forward, but they look incredibly fragile at the opposite end.
Christian Pulisic tries his luck from 25 yards out, sending the ball well over the bar via a deflection. Judging by the five minutes or so since Spurs scored, it will not be too long before the next goal arrives at Wembley Stadium!
Dortmund starting to patiently work the ball forward now in this pretty crazy game. Very open at the moment, but it is the German visitors who are under more pressure to get bodies forward in search of a second equaliser of the night.
Tottenham standing firm at the back to keep the opposition out. Just seen a replay of the Kane goal - the Englishman sent Sahin to ground when charging through on goal, but the referee made the right call to allow play to go on.
This is the first time that Dortmund have ever conceded more than one goal in the opening 15 minutes of a Champions League game. They have responded well on both occasions, briefly levelling up through a Andriy Yarmolenko curler.
Sahin's cross into the back post was right into the path of Yarmolenko, but Ben Davies got across to clear the ball behind for a corner - good defending. Spurs unable to really get out of their own half of the field at the moment.
The visiting side dominating possession at the moment, well and truly pegging their opponents back. Not really sure if Tottenham can maintain this, and their supporters are now urging them to snap out of this defensive mindset.
Great defending from Vertonghen to cut out Pulisic's squared pass to Aubameyang. A tap-in for the Gabonese striker if not for that intervention, as Dortmund continue to dominate possession. The opening third of the match has flown by!
Christian Pulisic causing all sorts of problems at the back for Spurs, who are playing like the away side at the moment. All well and good for now, but if the Premier League side concede they will surely struggle to click back into gear.
Aubameyang is so nearly played in behind, but Kagawa overhit the pass and Lloris was able to collect. BVB creating openings at will now, without truly troubling the Tottenham keeper, but it is surely just a matter of time before that goal arrives.
YELLOW CARD! Dier clatters into both Sokratis and Davies, winning the ball but showing too much of his studs for the referee's liking. A chance for BVB moments later as Pulisic slides in but fails to make contact with Aubameyang's cross from six yards out.
Half time fast closing in now at Wembley and, while Spurs have wrestled back a little more control, it is still Dortmund who are on top. BVB were on level terms for four minutes before Kane restored the home side's advantage.
The officials get the decision wrong by awarding Dortmund a corner after the ball quite clearly came off the head of Andriy Yarmolenko. It nearly works to the hosts' advantage as they are given the chance to break, but Burki ends the attack.
Still just the three attempts on target in the first half, each resulting with the net bulging. Burki is having a real howler, coming 40 yards out and failing to win the ball, but Son was flagged for offside after knocking it past him.
HALF TIME: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2-1 BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Rather surprisingly, the referee decided against adding on any stoppage time at the end of the first half. Pulisic had the ball in the back of the net from the final act, but the man in the middle had already blown his whistle due to Aubameyang being offside. What a gripping opening 45 minutes that turned out to be!
Tottenham got the ball rolling with a goal from the first shot of the evening, with Son Heung-min getting off the mark for the season by beating Roman Burki at his front post from a tight angle. The visitors responded brilliantly, throwing plenty of bodies forward and getting their reward seven minutes later through a piece of individual magic from Andriy Yarmolenko, who marked his debut with an edge-of-the-box curler past Hugo Lloris.
Four minutes is all Spurs had to wait until they restored their lead, as once again Burki was somehow beaten at his front post by the power of Harry Kane's angled drive after the Englishman ran past a couple of opposition players. Dortmund would go on to dominate the remainder of the first half, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both producing big blocks to deny Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The final ball was proving to be BVB's downfall, with former Tottenham target Aubameyang putting too much on his right-sided cross when Christian Pulisic had peeled away from his man in the middle. Pulisic thought that he had levelled up the match for a second time from the final meaningful kick of the half, only for the referee to blow his whistle for an offside infringement in the build-up.
Tottenham Hotspur ahead, then, but Borussia Dortmund have certainly been the better side since going 2-1 down. Unlikely to see either manager make a change at the break, but both Mauricio Pochettino and Peter Bosz have a number of talented players to turn to.

RESTART! We are back under way at Wembley Stadium, where neither manager has made a change. Toprak takes the ball clean to the face early on, leading to a short stoppage in play for the summer signing to receive some treatment.
Not seen a great deal of Aurier high up the pitch so far, but he got forward on this occasion. The former PSG man's delivery into the box from the right was easily caught by Burki - the first thing he has got right all evening!
CHANCE! Lloris keeps his sweeper keeper tag intact by racing out and getting to the ball ahead of Aubameyang. Up the other end Spurs created their first chance since going ahead for the second time, which Kane wasted by blasting over the bar from inside the box.
CHANCE! Two big chances for Tottenham in the space of two minutes. As simple as you like, as Kane latches on to a ball over the top and squares it to Son, who took one touch to set himself before curling over the bar from a great position.
Much better from the Lilywhites in this second half, as they now refuse to sit deep inside their own half and instead create some chances of their own. Will they live to rue missing those big opportunities in quick succession?
Really good piece of play from Dortmund to work the ball into the Spurs box. In the end it comes to nothing, with the hosts doing enough to clear it behind for a corner. Little between the sides over the past couple of minutes.
GOAL DISALLOWED! For the second time tonight Dortmund have a goal ruled out. It is a shocker of a decision, in truth, as Gabonese striker Aubameyang was well onside when volleying the ball past Lloris at the back post.
YELLOW CARD! A little sympathy for the linesman, as a few Dortmund players were running back from an offside position, but there is no denying that BVB have been hard done by. Vertonghen is booked for a kick on Yarmalenko.
GOAL! TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 3-1 BORUSSIA DORTMUND (HARRY KANE)
Kane is well and truly back in form as he bags his second of the night. A brilliant finish it was, too, as he tucked the ball past Burki when picked out inside the box. Die Borussen will feel cheated because they had a goal wrongly ruled out.
Certainly not game over just yet, though Tottenham now have a little breathing space. Dortmund do not deserve to be two goals down on the balance of the 90 minutes, but they have ultimately taken their chances when they arrived.
BORUSSIA DORTMUND SUB! Mario Gotze is introduced in place of Kagawa for the final 25 minutes or so. Spurs nearly had a killer fourth through wing-back Ben Davies, but Burki got down well to just about push the ball to safety.
SAVE! What a save this is from Lloris down low. A Dortmund corner was flicked towards the back post, where Aubameyang this time saw his volley saved by the Frenchman. Son countered but was denied by a good defensive block.
BORUSSIA DORTMUND SUB! Half a chance for Alderweireld, who could not quite keep down his header from a corner. Dortmund with a second chance of the game, bringing on Castro for Dahoud with exactly 20 minutes left to play at Wembley Stadium.
This match looks certain to have another goal or two in it, as Dortmund are completely open at the back as they desperately search for a goal. Should they pull one back then those Wembley hoodoo thoughts will come flooding back for Spurs fans.
A couple of defensive headers in the Spurs box, the latest from two-goal hero Kane. Dortmund supporters making plenty of noise in their section of the ground, but time is fast running down for their side to get back in the match.
CHANCE! Another chance comes and goes for Tottenham, as Christian Eriksen bends the ball over the ball - via a deflection, which went unspotted by the officials - when he perhaps could have played in Son alongside him.
Tottenham able to breathe far easier now compared to at 2-1, thanks to that second Harry Kane strike of the evening on the hour. A case of seeing this one through now for the Lilywhites, who head to Nicosia to face APOEL in a fortnight's time.
BORUSSIA DORTMUND SUB! Bosz makes his third and final change of the contest, bringing on Dan-Axel Zagadou for Toprak in defence. Kane should have added a fourth moments later, dragging his attempt wide - again the deflection went unnoticed.
Die Borussen still pushing for a goal, but Pulisic could not quite pick out Aubameyang near the back post. It has turned out to be a frustrating evening for those attacking players, though they would have been level if the officials had not made a bad call.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR SUB! Son, who has had a very impressive game, makes way for Sissoko for the closing stages. Just a case of Pochettino bringing on some fresh legs to see this one through now, with the Wembley hoodoo nearly banished.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR SUB! Fernando Llorente makes his Wembley bow, taking over from Harry Kane up top. An impressive night for the departing striker, adding another couple of goals to his Tottenham tally - 103 overall for him now.
YELLOW CARD! A late caution for Jeremy Toljan for his challenge. Die Borussen asking plenty of questions at the moment, as they have done pretty much all evening, but the final ball has all too often let them down.
YELLOW CARD! Castro illegally challenges Dembele and, after being left frustrated by the free kick awarded against him, says something that he shouldn't have to the referee for the game's fourth booking - two of those coming in the last two minutes.
Two of the four added-on minutes have been played at Wembley. Spurs can surely now celebrate a second win here in 12, having dug deep to get themselves over the line. A tad fortunate, perhaps, as Dortmund deserved to be level at one point.
RED CARD! Absolute shocker of a decision from the referee, who has had a poor evening. Jan Vertonghen caught Gotze with a stray arm, but it was worthy of a yellow card at most. Surely too late to have any impact on the game.

A bit of confusion as to whether Vertonghen was shown a second yellow or a straight red, though that does not particularly matter right now as Tottenham Hotspur are celebrating a rare Wembley win. Harry Kane scored twice to help the Lilywhites to a 3-1 victory, but Borussia Dortmund will perhaps feel a little hard done by.
