Manchester City beat Tottenham to win Carabao Cup - how the players rated
Sports Mole

MANCHESTER CITY:

ZACK STEFFEN: Was a virtual spectator for most of the game but was alert when needed, producing a fine save from Giovani Lo Celso. 6/10

KYLE WALKER: Not tested defensively and did not need to exert himself too much in attack as City's forwards were so fluid. 6

RUBEN DIAS: Not overly troubled by the Spurs forwards. 6

AYMERIC LAPORTE: Spurs were unhappy he picked up just the one yellow card after a couple of risky challenges but he was in the right place to head the winner. 7

JOAO CANCELO: Played some fine passes and forced a good save from Hugo Lloris in the latter stages of the first half. 7

FERNANDINHO: Solid in the middle and regularly looked to push City forward. 7

ILKAY GUNDOGAN: A committed box-to-box performance but quiet by recent standards when in and around the box. 6

PHIL FODEN: A bright presence in the City attack but did not have things all his own way. 7

KEVIN DE BRUYNE: Demanded the ball at every opportunity and covered plenty of grass, clearly not troubled by his ankle injury. 8

RIYAD MAHREZ: Dangerous throughout on the counter-attack, particularly when cutting inside, and unlucky not to score. 8

RAHEEM STERLING: Perhaps had a point to prove and was lively from the outset, unfortunate not to get more reward for his efforts. 8

CITY SUBSTITUTES:

RODRI (on for Fernandinho, 84): Helped City see out the game. 6

BERNARDO SILVA (on for De Bruyne, 87): n/a

TOTTENHAM:

HUGO LLORIS: Kept City at bay for so long, making a string of good saves, but could not do anything about City's winner. 7

SERGE AURIER: Gave away the crucial free-kick in the final 10 minutes which led to City and was also troubled all afternoon by Sterling. 5

TOBY ALDERWEIRELD: The Belgian had a busy afternoon but denied a certain goal in the first half and also produced several other blocks. 7

ERIC DIER: Produced a goal-saving block early on from Sterling and was commanding during 90 minutes where he was regularly tested. 7

SERGIO REGUILON: Unable to be an attacking force as he was largely pinned back by Mahrez, who tied him up in knots for much of the afternoon. 5

PIERRE-EMILE HOJBJERG: Had a tough job trying to protect the back four and was at times overrun. 5

HARRY WINKS: Trusted in the middle of the park after virtually no minutes in recent weeks, which was obvious at times. 5

LUCAS MOURA: Was Tottenham's most energetic player as he tried to transition between defence and attack. Replaced midway through the second half. 6

GIOVANI LO CELSO: Was wasteful in possession in the first half, but had Spurs' first effort on target with a curling effort after the break. 5

SON HEUNG-MIN: Has enjoyed playing against City in the past, but had an off-day here and did not trouble the opposition defence. 4

HARRY KANE: Won the race for fitness after an ankle injury and came into the game in the second half. But did not get a chance to shine in the final third. 6

SUBSTITUTES:

GARETH BALE (on for Moura, 66): Had little impact on the game when he came on. 5

MOUSSA SISSOKO (on for Lo Celso, 67): Added some energy but no telling contribution. 5

DELE ALLI (on for Hojbjerg, 83): Barely had a touch. 5

STEVEN BERGWIJN (on for Aurier, 90) N/A
