Tottenham Hotspur have comfortably seen off Brighton & Hove Albion in this evening's League Cup clash at White Hart Lane, with Erik Lamela and Harry Kane's unanswered goals securing a 2-0 win for the North London outfit.

Spurs controlled the early stages of the game, Andros Townsend marauding into the net just six minutes in following a smart one-two with Aaron Lennon, but the visitors' defence was steadfast in the face of the attack.

Around the quarter-hour mark, Kane appealed for a penalty following contact with Inigo Calderon, but this was turned down.

In the face of the hosts piling men forward, the Seagulls were able to create a chance in the 20th minute when Kazenga LuaLua, pushed wide after allowing the ball to bounce one too many times in the box, failed to hit the target.

Midway through the second half, it was Brighton's turn to appeal for a penalty after Kyle Naughton appeared to handle the ball in the box following a free kick, but again the referee waved away the requests.

Christian Walton, the away side's 18-year-old goalkeeper, then did well to keep out a fierce Roberto Soldado shot towards the end of the half, before Kane fired over the bar.

The Seagulls did well to keep the scoreline goalless come the break, but their resistance was broken just nine minutes after the restart, as Soldado and Lamela linked up in the final third, the latter slipping clean through on goal and slotting home.

Another penalty call was turned down in the 73rd minute when Soldado was felled in the Brighton box, but this mattered little because, less than 60 seconds later, Kane pounced on the Spaniard's rebounded shot to double Spurs' lead.

The visitors managed to test the goalkeeper late on, with Adrian Colunga pouncing on a Paulinho error to force a save, but the game finished with the Premier League outfit securing a fairly comfortable win and progress to the next round of the competition.
